A Natural disaster is an event that occurs naturally without any human influences causing it. Whereas a human disaster is an event that was influenced by human activity, making the impacts to people and the environment worse. Natural disasters are due to the nature of the disaster that cannot be changed or reduced in any way. One factor that supports this is the magnitude of the earthquake. Eg. Haiti earthquake of 2011 had a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale. whereas Japans was a magnitude of 9.0. The higher magnitude would cause greater impacts such as destruction of infrastructure and greater deaths. This is proven as Japan had 18,000 lives lost. Therefore showing that the nature and physical aspects of a disaster is what…show more content…
Therefore showing that it was a human disaster due to the human influence of poorly built infrastructure. Another factor that supports that they are human disasters is the response to the event such as medical aid. This was shown by the 5 day delay in Haiti for the medical aid to arrive and food, search teams. Etc. the number of deaths already significantly rose during the wait due to the lack of clean drinking water and the people trapped under rubble without help. Therefore showing that due to Haiti being an LEDC, the hazards were much greater than if it was an MEDC due to Haiti having no warning systems or regular earthquake drills. Further proof is that Haiti only had medical staff of 1 doctor and due to 4/5 living in poverty meaning that health was poor. Therefore shows that human influences such as number of available medical staff impacts the event and so shows it is human disasters and not natural. In conclusion, I believe that natural disasters are influenced by both human activity and the nature of the event. Eg. 2 different countries could have the same magnitude of earthquakes but the impacts of one could be greater than the other due to poorly built infrastructure, the speed of response to the event and the access of the country to technology in order to prepare, predict and attempt to reduce the impacts. I do accept that disasters are natural but
