A site called Coobool Creek on the Wakool River, located between Swan Hill and Deniliquin in the Murray River Valley was where G. M. Black accumulated 126 skulls from the suface area near Doherty’s Hut at the Coobool Crossing in 1950 and they were studied by Brown. The 126 crania has been returned to the Aborigines for a reburial. The collection was named the Murray Black collection after G. M. Black who found it and the location in which in was found.
1 The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has stepped in to provide restorative practices upon 500,000 acres of heavily degraded public grasslands. This land is suffering from severe soil erosion as well as degradation due to overgrazing. The suppression of natural fires has caused shrubs and invasive weeds to encroach upon the grasslands. A full scale assessment will take place on this land before restoration efforts begin. The first thing that would need to be assessed is the soil, for it is eroding and holding little nutrient value. Samples would be taken of this soil from various parts of the grasslands including the eroded gullies. Each soil sample would be taken from at least 1 foot below the surface, to test for carbon richness below the topsoil. These would then be tested for texture, density, water retention, and chemical composition. Typically, powerful, healthy soil will contain amounts of both Nitrogen and Phosphorous, which are essential nutrients in sustainable plant growth. These samples would also be tested for any build-up of salts, something known as soil salinization. Unhealthy, salinized soil is created over years of over-hydrating and deep plowing. Excess water will suffocate root systems of once-healthy crops, and salinized soils will reduce crop output up to 20% (Withgott &Brennan, 2011). The next assessment would be in the shrubs and invasive weed species on the land. Knowing the volume and location of these plants gives way to a better understanding of

The state of Texas is the second largest state in the United States. Due to its location and size, it covers different geographical areas and climates. These areas support different ecosystems from deserts to coastal wetlands, with local wildlife varying with the environment. With such varied climates and yearly rainfall, it is easy to have crops growing in the east and little rainfall and an open rocky desert with cacti in the west. The geological history is also varied across the state leading to different mineral deposits by region. It is easy to see that Texas is a state with many unique areas that provide a wide variety of natural resources, native crops, and wildlife.
I am interested in the Maine Rural AmeriCorps Outdoor Adventure position that was advertised on OutdoorEd.com. This position combines my love of nature and educating people, especially children, in an outdoor setting where everyone can experience and learn about the world around us. The Midcoast Conservancy is wonderful organization that connects people to place and place to people via

On Sunday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which would have come a half a mile south of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota. HOWEVER, Instead, the Corps said it would begin to explore alternative routes. While members of the tribe and its allies celebrated the decision, some worry that the victory may only be temporary, given President-elect Donald Trump’s support for the almost 1,200 mile-long pipeline. However, North Dakota’s governor, the company and members of the state’s congressional delegation all denounced the decision. Therefore, members of the tribe have said for many months that the pipeline would destroy sacred lands and were worried an oil leak could
Oil is a significant essential in this society because it runs automobiles such as cars, buses, truck etc. Without oil, transportation, business and economic trade wouldn’t be possible. “The Dakota Access Pipeline Project is a $3.78 billion conduit being built from the oil-rich Bakken fields in North Dakota. .transport up to 570,000 barrels a day of crude to refineries and markets in the Gulf and on the East Coast” (Ablow). The Dakota Access Pipeline is funded by Energy Transfer Partners. They believe that will have a huge impact on the economic state of the United States because it will “bring an estimated $156 million in sales and income taxes to state and local governments as well as add 8,000 to 12,000 construction jobs”(Park). With over 10,000 of jobs and $150 million dollars that would bring into this country, The Dakota Access Pipeline is a project that is beneficial to the local and national economy of the country. “In addition, the Dakota Access Pipeline will improve overall safety to the public and environment. It will reduce crude oil shipped by truck and by rail and increase the amount shipped by pipeline” (Energy Transfers). Minimizing the trucks in delivering oil will help to prevent global warming and climate change. After the pipeline was approved by the government, The members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe protested near the construction of The Dakota Access Pipeline. The tribe members are deeply against the project because it would damage their
To me, Case Western Reserve University symbolizes everything that an individual could, and should, want to be a part of. World-renowned academic excellence, top notch facilities, and an unmatched commitment to its students are all things that make Case Western Reserve University a dream institution. For the longest, the only thing I knew about Case was its undergraduate programs. As I was getting ready to apply undergraduate programs, I received numerous brochures and letters from the institution filled with information. In the end, I decided to stay closer to home for family reasons.
An old Sioux prophecy once stated that a black snake will cross the great Sioux land. The black snake would come at a great time of uncertainty and destroy the world as we know it. It also states the only way to stop this black snake is for the youth to come together and stop it. Many protestors, commonly referred as water protectors, believe this black snake has arrived in the form of the Dakota Access Pipeline. In the beginning of the year 2016 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers published a draft of it plan to approve the Dakota Access Pipeline route under the Missouri River. This has sparked controversy between the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and the company building the pipeline, Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners. This has led to many Native American gathering in protest against the pipeline.
Should the Dakota Access Pipeline be built? Because of so many protesting acts going on, it really shouldn't be built. Police keep attacking Native Americans and other protesters. If the protesters keep fighting them they'll have to give up on everything and cancel the pipeline once and for all. I'm sure that all of you hate people getting hurt for this so, we need more people to come and help us stop this once and for all. With every single person down the Mississippi River with one burst the water and everything could get poisoned so, everybody couldn't drink the water until it was cleaned out. With this pipeline their could be a burst and many people could get sick.
The 9th Circuit Federal Court recently affirmed a district court case that upholds an ATF interpretation on medical marijuana card holders and the purchase of firearms. The court’s decision makes it illegal for an individual to possess, transfer, or purchase firearms if they hold a medical marijuana card.
South Dakota was one of the states that provided a great amount of uranium to be used during the 50’s, 60’s and the Cold War era. The demand of uranium increased and the constructions of mines were also increased. One of the areas that needed uranium was the military to be used in weapons ammunition and vehicles. Most of these mines were abandoned and the contamination spread around the nearby land and waters. “An earlier study of Forest Service land, on which the old mines from the 1950s and 1960s are located, found levels of arsenic, uranium and other contaminants in concentrations higher than what occurs naturally” (Walker, 2007). Some of these waste was carry down by rain precipitation to areas away from the mine. Indian reservations were affected by the mine contamination and
In the case study Carolina Wilderness Outfitters, Sue Ramos the head of internal auditing, launched an investigation based on improper termination, which turned up a new allegation of possible accounting irregularities and potential fraud.
What is the Dakota Access Pipeline? The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 1,172 mile underground state of the art 30” pipeline extending from the Bakken/Three Forks production area in North Dakota to Pakota, Illinois. The pipeline will transfer oil from North Dakota to other refining markets. The pipeline will run underground and has passed federal safety requirements. They claim the pipeline is safer than most modes of transportations and will be very beneficial for Americans.
