Naturalistic Observation Paper

Naturalistic observation involves recording subjects' naturally occurring behavior while they are in their natural environment. This experiment revolves around this type of observation. Specifically, it involves the observation of the various human dyads (male-female, male-male, female-female,) social interaction, within in a public environment. Focal points of observation included conversation space (distance between individuals heads,), and body language.

Naturalistic observational research is important because it allows researchers to observe people in a natural habitat without any variable manipulation. Most importantly in naturalistic observation, the researcher does not interfere with the situation in any way. Naturalistic observation can be structured or unstructured; for this study, unstructured naturalistic observation was mostly used. There were pre-determined characteristics that the researchers wrote down on a spreadsheet, however, specific behaviors were recorded as they happened (i.e., the type of reaction that resulted from each person who picked up the card). Naturalistic observation is important in psychological research because it gives insight into the natural behaviors of people. When a person is unaware they are being observed it reduces change in behavior, which can occur when if they are aware that they are being observed.

Throughout this assignment, my perspective on the person I studied changed. I learned several things about their character and the behavior that they presented. This task showed me that by simply observing a person’s behavior, my perspective about them changes.

My observation locations are Starbucks and restaurant. I chose them as my observation location because those are the places where people normally talk, study, socialize and interact in a casual manner.

In order to study human development and perform naturalistic observation I went to the mall. I selected a 9-year-old white girl as the subject for my observation. I observed the subject for 30 minutes. During my observation the subject was not interrupted and was not aware of my study.

During my naturalistic observation, I was at my sister’s softball game at the field behind Bridgeport Middle School. There were two identical twins little girls, who were three years old, playing together in the practice batting cage. In the beginning, they were walking around together, eating popsicles while they watched two other older kids, a boy and a girl most likely around the age range of five to seven, chasing each other. The older kids were playing tag and invited the twins to join them. From their facial expressions, it was obvious they were thrilled to play with them; however they were hesitant to run and chase the older kids. They stood at the starting location and watched as the other kids raced back and forth, and had to move

The three examples of naturalistic observation would be when you watch dogs play in the park or watch how your professor direct their class, the reseacher examining forcefulness of childen, and recording how frequently a modest student speaks up in class.

A case study is defined as a full, detailed picture of a participant or a small group of other participants. While a correlational study can suggest that both variables have a relationship that exists. An experiment is where the experimenter’s hypothesis is tested to see whether it works. Typically, the experimenter has an independent variable (the cause) where they can manipulate the variable and as well as the dependent variable (the effect).

For my home visit, I was able to observe a boy who was almost 2 years old. His name was Liam, and he was born with what is called, upside down guts. He suffered from low blood sugar seizures as well at a very young age. Because of these seizures, he had a feeding tube in all day. His sensory skills are not at his age level because he never had to feel the texture of foods. He is currently doing much better but is very fussy. When I went with the service provider, a speech pathologist also came along. This was his day to be evaluated for his speech. The service providers did not bring any toys with them but used toys at the home. While I observed they wanted him to place a ball into a hole of his toy. The speech service provider would put the ball in his hands, take the ball away, give him a paper that had a picture of a ball and the word on its.

This paper is going to describe the behavioral and cognitive traits that can be inferred from that behavior of a two year old child that I observed in the park as she was playing with her mother. The child that I observed is a girl, has blonde hair and is physically well-developed for her age. She is around two, weighs approximately twenty (20) pounds and is about two (2) feet tall.

When it came to the nondomimant condition, the experimenter asked subjects to hold the pen with the hand that they would not normally use for writing. The experiment consisted of four different parts that were printed on separate sheets of paper and presented to subjects in a single booklet. The first task was a practice task and involved drawing a straight line between two points. The second task involved drawing a line between 10 ordered digits printed randomly around the page. Subjects were then told to indicate on this scale how difficult it was for them to perform the digit connection task. On Friday, February 10th, 2017 I did a naturalistic observation with the intent to observe gender dynamics unfold in a specific setting. I attended a party on Friday night and observed for approximately 2 hours. The setting was a lingerie party at Gaia’s Cradle.

Observational research is type of correlational (i.e., nonexperimental) research in which a researcher observes ongoing behavior. There are a variety of types of observational research, each of which has both strengths and weaknesses. These types are organized below by the extent to which an experimenter intrudes upon or controls the environment.

My practicum took place on September 7,2016 from nine thirty to ten thirty. The practicum took place at Impact Early College High School in Baytown. The class I observed was Ms. Nguyen’s class of juniors and seniors that contained twenty students, seven boys and thirteen girls. The class appeared to be alert and ready to learn. Since this was their second period class they already had enough time to shake off their fatigue. The subject was Pre-Calculous and the topic was operations of functions. Students entered the classroom in a calm manner and socialized until it was time to start class. The teacher instructed the students to take their seats and take five minutes to write their assignments into their academic calendar. The teacher went
