Nurture vs. nature has always been a very controversial topic among people. Nurture refers to the upbringing of a child, and how parenting affects and plays a role in the development of a child, shaping their later life. Nature refers to the biological factors of a baby, and how right from wrong is already programmed into a baby's head, shaping who they already are, and are going to be in the future. Nurture has a much larger impact and role in the development of a baby or child. A person's environment affects the way they react under pressure in certain circumstances. In chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies, the boys start to follow the role of how English act: “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. …show more content…

This proves the fact that children are indeed changed and persuaded by nurture, especially while under pressure or in unsure circumstances. They resort to what they know. In Perceptions of nature, nurture and behavior, Levitt explains, “Upbringing shapes a person's personality. The environment in which a child grows up in, particularly the influence and role of the parents, shapes how a child will grow up and what sort of adult they will be.” (Levitt, Biomed Central) This quote shows how an adult raising a child (nurture) sculpts and molds the way a child will act under certain circumstances and what they will become. In chapter 4 of Lord of the Flies, Golding states, “Now although there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand, Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing.” (Golding, 60) This quote shows there were no parents to help, causing Maurice to feel lost, guilty, and unsure. The way Maurice is behaving and felt also reveals his genetic factors, affecting the way he thinks and functions.
