Nurture vs. nature has always been a very controversial topic among people. Nurture refers to the upbringing of a child, and how parenting affects and plays a role in the development of a child, shaping their later life. Nature refers to the biological factors of a baby, and how right from wrong is already programmed into a baby's head, shaping who they already are, and are going to be in the future. Nurture has a much larger impact and role in the development of a baby or child. A person's environment affects the way they react under pressure in certain circumstances. In chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies, the boys start to follow the role of how English act: “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. …show more content…
This proves the fact that children are indeed changed and persuaded by nurture, especially while under pressure or in unsure circumstances. They resort to what they know. In Perceptions of nature, nurture and behavior, Levitt explains, “Upbringing shapes a person's personality. The environment in which a child grows up in, particularly the influence and role of the parents, shapes how a child will grow up and what sort of adult they will be.” (Levitt, Biomed Central) This quote shows how an adult raising a child (nurture) sculpts and molds the way a child will act under certain circumstances and what they will become. In chapter 4 of Lord of the Flies, Golding states, “Now although there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand, Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing.” (Golding, 60) This quote shows there were no parents to help, causing Maurice to feel lost, guilty, and unsure. The way Maurice is behaving and felt also reveals his genetic factors, affecting the way he thinks and functions. However, genetic factors do not affect behavior, it's behavior that changes our genetic factors (the way we act and
In the Lord of the Flies, we encounter a group of boys who have been stranded on an uninhabited island after a plane crash. They are English school boys who have been taught proper manners and understand what it means to be under authority. They demonstrate this by their initial election of a chief and the establishment of a certain degree of rules and order. However, this falls apart very quickly and the boys’ sense of right and wrong are abandoned. What was the driving force behind the savagery and chaos that developed as the structure they established deteriorated? Was it the environmental factors they were cast into, or was it an innate biological instinct that drove them to the edge?
(Hook/Lead) When humans are born, they all have a savage side to them, which can be held in and tamed, or let out under certain circumstances. This is what author William Golding claims in his award winning novel, Lord of the Flies. (GDT) An English plane full of schoolboys crash lands into an island in the Pacific ocean. With all adults dead and nobody on the island, the boys elect a leader named Ralph, and try to create their own society and civilization. Jack, one of the other schoolboys does not follow the rules put in place by hunting and letting loose. Over time, Jack becomes a savage with no sense of obedience. While Ralph wants to get off the island, Jack’s evil ways of killing pigs and uncivilized nature get to the rest of the boys on the island as more and more of them want to live like Jack and focus more on meat and savagery rather than being rescued. (Thesis) The boys value Jack’s leadership more than Ralph’s because Jack offers hunting and fun while Ralph offers the boys rescue and order.
In the article “Nurture the Nature”, the side of nurture seems to have a greater impact, said in the text, “During various phases of development, children need appropriate experiences that support their interest in exploration, experimentation, and self-direction.” (Sravanti, Sentence marked with [4]) This shows that kids are impressionable, you can
In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding is able to use his outstanding writing abilities utilizing metaphors, symbolism, and other literary devices to establish a hidden message throughout the novel. The hidden message that Golding builds on is that there is a natural evil inside every human being, which is suppressed in an organized society through laws, rules, and punishment. The young boys in the novel are on an island all by themselves. There is no punishment for their actions, therefore allowing that evil to come out of most of the boys. All humans have an innate evil within them and that evil is brought out when there is a lack of civilization and consequence as seen in Simon’s murder,
There are many characters in the book Lord of the Flies that can be related to the debate nature vs nurture. Characters like Jack, Ralf, and Piggy all have certain specific changes in their personality but Jack and Ralf relate more to nurture. Where Piggy’s personality does not change making him more related to nature. All in all, the Nature vs Nurture debate is one that will be debated for
The boys that were stranded on the island in the book Lord of the Flies were influenced by their environment and the other kids around them. When the group of boys all participated in the murder of Simon, Ralph began to become
At first glance, nature and nurture may seem the same thing, but they both have very significant differences. Nature is the environment in which one grows as well as the genetic features they are born with; this has to do with their family and surroundings. Nurture is a concept that refers to the influences that allow a child to form a personality; this can be through experiences, decisions, or behaviors learned from others. When it comes to which of these has the most influence on an infant's sense of good versus evil, nurture takes precedence. Examples of this can be found in William Golding's Lord of the Flies and an article written by Lakshmi Sravanti entitled, Nurture the Nature.
Lord of the Flies was written in spite of Golding's consideration of human evil, a topic that involves an examination not only of human nature but also its causes. What causes someone to be evil? How does someone become so terrifyingly vicious? Is a person’s development affected more by their genetics or their experiences? This is the old-age controversial topic of nature vs. nurture.
Let me take the general concept of nature vs nurture, nature means innate qualities like human nature, genetics and nurture refer to care given or behavior taught by parents to children or
The encounters someone experiences throughout their life nurtures them into who they are and how they respond to the world. The way a child observes and gets disciplined, nurtures them to know the difference between right and wrong. The actions of the boys in Lord of the Flies, ultimately shows that the way someone behaves is based on how they were nurtured. Roger displayed this when he was throwing rocks at Henry and remembered back to the consequences of home. Jack faces a humiliating experience which nurtures him in the wrong way, causing him to become obsessed with
Nurture versus Nature has been a popular debate since the 16th century. Nurture is the belief that babies are born with blank slates and are taught everything, including a moral code. Nature is the belief that humans are born with a sense of morality. In Lord of the Flies by William Goling, a group of adolescent boys are stranded on an island without any adults, the book is a writing on Nurture versus Nature as the boys attempt to survive and govern themselves. The stance of nature, however, is far more convincing than nurture, as nature is backed by research including twins, and behavioral genetics.
There are two sides to the human mind: the nurtured side, and the true nature side. Is human behavior based on the effects of the environment, or solely based on who they truly are by genes or brain development? In Lord of the Flies, the boys were at first moral and proper children, who turned savage, almost animalistic. This is based on the boy’s true selves, or their nature, that they changed. The environmental factors did not take a place in changing their personalities dramatically; it was based on their nature.
The characteristics of nature vs. nurture are quite different. Nature is those qualities about a person that are deemed genetic. Such genetics heritability includes a person’s color and gender. Nature is a person’s biological determinism. Characteristics of nurture include environmental variation and external influences. These characteristics are dependent on such factors as social status and education and the influence these factors have on a person’s character. In my opinion, both nature and nurture uniformly determine of person’s personality and intelligence. This opinion is widely debated but not debunked.
Most texts discuss the idea of Nature Versus Nurture Nature and nurture relates to the inherent qualities (nature) as opposed to personal experiences (nurture). In the 1954 classic Lord of the Flies, Golding slowly shapes the boys and leads the reader from a group of civilized young boys into true savages. Golding uses a metaphor to compare [Jack’s] laughter to the “bloodthirsty snarling” of an animal. This demonstrates to the reader Jack’s descent into barbarism and we question whether he is more human or wild animal.
Did you know that Nature vs. Nurture has be debated for years, but is still unsolved. Nature vs. Nurture is a debate about if the choices we make and how we act is determined on our environment, nature, or we were raised this way, nurture. I think Nature is represented in Lord of the Flies because of the DNA evidence, the fact that the boys were raised to be civil, and their ancestors instincts.
