NBA All-Star Weekend is in books, and it might have been one of the better All-Star Weekends in several years. Although the All-Star Game wasn’t as competitive as most had hoped, the pageantry surrounding the event was at an all-time high as Kobe Bryant’s farewell tour made its latest stop at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. The Slam Dunk Contest might have been the best ever, the Three-Point Contest came down to teammates and likely the two best shooters in the world, and a big man pulled off the biggest upset of the weekend by winning the Skills Competition. The culmination was one of the better All-Star Weekends in recent memory.

Saturday night in the Air Canada Centre, we may have witnessed the greatest dunk contest duel since Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins competed for the dunk crown in 1988. Entering Saturday’s NBA Slam Dunk Contest, LaVine, the defending dunk champion, was the prohibited favorite over an unproven field. However, Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon refused to let LaVine run away with the dunking title like he did a year ago.

A record number of eight 50s were handed out, and that total could have been higher if “Russian” judge Shaquille O’Neal had not handed out a pair of 9s on Gordon and LaVine attempts in the opening round. As the contest progressed, both dunkers were forced to make up dunks up on the fly following a Championship Round in which both dunkers posted dual 50s. Gordon and LaVine consulted with other players on the sideline as they tried to come up with new material on the spot. Both dunkers repeatedly sent the Canada Centre crowd into a frenzy with a record six consecutive perfect scores as the event morphed into a sudden death dunk-off where putting up anything less than a 50 was likely to lose the competition.
