Nebraska Methodist Health System (NMHS) is the first health system to encompass hospitals, clinics, a nursing and allied health college, medical supply distributorship and central laundry. Methodist Hospital is one of the three affiliated hospitals under the NMHS umbrella and is where the large regional network began. Nebraska Methodist Hospital’s first location was founded in 1891 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Nebraska Methodist Hospital moved to its present location, off of Dodge Street, in 1968 leading to the current vision of being the regions preferred integrated health system. Today, the 124 year-old hospital has grown to a prominent, not-for-profit medical facility with a direct mission statement, “Methodist …show more content…

In 1945, The Methodist Pathology Center (MPC) began the journey to provide clinical and anatomic pathology excellence for the hospital. Dr. John Schenken, the head of laboratory for Methodist hospital from 1945 – 1979, carved the path that has lead the Methodist Pathology Center to being a nationally recognized center of pathology. In 1979, the prominent leader left the laboratory in the hands of his equally qualified son, Dr. Jerry Schenken. In February 2011, Nebraska Methodist Hospital opened The Schenken Pavilion, a $22 million, 42,000-square-foot laboratory to further enhance the foundation of pathology excellence the Schenken family had created (“Methodist Pathology Center”). The facility provides services for Methodist hospital patients, as well as serving individuals, physicians, clinics and hospitals in a three-state area. ("Methodist News Hub"). The reason why l chose this organization is because I am currently employed as a provider relations coordinator. The framework of clinical excellence in the organization begins with a structure that supports the process (Porter-O’Grady, 2016 et al p. 327). Building excellence into the fabric of an organization requires support and engagement of nurse leaders and their followers to the work of healing, in a work environment where effective communications occur and healthcare providers (including nurse leaders) are acknowledged for their positive behavior and negative behaviors are addressed quickly (Porter-O’Grady, 2016 et al p.
In considering leadership traits all specialty administrators, it is important to understand there is no one size fit all model for leadership. For example, what works well at Southwest may not necessarily work well for the Marriot brand, but there are some core fundamental values of leadership that should be established regardless of where one is leading. The traits for great healthcare leaders follow the model of authentic leadership. Authentic leaders realize it’s not about them, they have integrity and great compassion for people. A key for successful leadership for LTC administrators is being able to build a great team. Authentic leaders understand the importance of creating a healthy work environment that fosters mutual trust between staff and leadership. Mirroring a model that exhibits a healthy relationship between leadership and staff also disseminates to the relationship between the staff and the patients. Another factor, in authentic leadership is leading by example; transformational leadership creates a culture in which employees feel empowered and encouraged to freely discuss and try new things (Northouse 2013,pg 200). LTC administrators who encompass these traits have the ability to take a group of individuals, address their needs, interest and commitment and bring them together to follow the common organizational goals (Wong, Cummings
CO 1: Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision of high quality nursing care, healthcare team
The superior act of living an effective life lies in the pursuit of excellent vision, to move from where we are to where we ought to be, either as a person or as an organization. A health care leader must motivate the organizational team, find how to work with the associates to effectively dedicate their time and energy to achieve the identified goals and objectives through the established vision. The team members need to buy into the vision, where they are currently doing what the leader envisions, the leader must encourage them, keep them on track and set standards for the team by setting goals and objective, flowing from the vision. This will enable the leader to move the health care organization to the expected performance level within the set time period. The leader must ensure that individual responsibilities of the associates are identified, motivated and resources provided to achieve the identified goals. To pursue the vision, I will lead the development of the health care organization’s strategic alignment of clear goals and objectives, to preserve the core mission and encourage progress toward the envisioned future state. Also, I will encourage and provide the direction for the organization without hindering the development of the goals that we expect to accomplish.
The value and leadership skills in healthcare are both very professions are vital skills that are needed to provide everyday care (Graber, 2008). This literature review will explore the important values and leadership in health care. The review will provide the understandings of both topics. The term value can be determined by a person's standards and principles (Gaudine & Beaton, 2002). According to Grojean, Resick & Diskson (2004) leadership, is an actual way to improve patient`s. A good leader is said to reveal certain roles and behaviors that influence others in the way of positive change and direction. Viinamäki, (2009) back these same ideas but also have confidence in that there is a difference between value and leadership. They believe that leaders are viewed as individuals who can connect through motivation, visions, and inspire positive directions to generate company and organizational change. Graber (2008) impression of leadership can be understood as the capability of one person to impact the behaviors and actions of other people.
Various internal and external factors influence quality management and outcomes in hospital organizations. One internal factor that affects quality management and outcomes is leadership within the organization. Leadership is important to have successful quality management outcomes because if the leadership does not support it, no change within the organization will be successful. “This commitment must be shared by the board of trustees and all senior clinical and administrative managers and understood that it is a long-term process” (Chassen and Leob, 2011). Leadership is one of the most influential internal parts of the quality management program. Leadership can either help the organization succeed with their support or help the organization fail if they do not support and follow
Mountain States Healthcare (MSH) is a regional system of hospitals located in several large metropolitan areas of Colorado, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. MHS started as a single hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, and, due to the business acumen and experience of its officers and Board of Directors, was quite successful and profitable ( MG371, Article). During the years MHS started to collect different hospitals and clinics that were not profiting and turning them around by treating them as their own entities but applying their successful management strategies. As the MHS grew they created the Utah Health Group and then the MSH.

The changing climate of the Canadian healthcare system influenced by calls for increased accountability for quality of care and financial prudence led to the re-evaluation of the healthcare delivery model including the leadership component (Canadian Health Leadership Network [CHLNet], 2014). Healthcare improvements and patient outcomes are associated with strong leadership (Swensen, Pugh, McMullan, & Kabcenell, 2013). To assist in developing competent and strong healthcare leaders, the CHLNet developed the LEADS framework that defines the skills and attributes required to successfully lead in the industry (CHLNet, 2015). This paper will include a description of a healthcare leader, the interview process and

The University of Nebraska Medical Center-Omaha has recently been recognized for excellence in accommodating individuals with disabilities. Nursing excellence is derived from an internal commitment to deliver the highest quality of care and is supported by structural empowerment. Nurses can achieve excellence by being actively involved in evidence-based research projects, staying abreast of the latestest advances in nursing care, and redesigning care delivery that is problematic or outdated. These activities require that nurses to step outside the box and assume new responsibilities within the nursing profession. Organizations who value excellence value innovation and creativity and provide the resources and infustructure necessary to enhance professional nursing practice (Clavelle & Goodwin, 2016). As such, the organizations core values of quality and excellence were incorporated into the Pilars of Care PPM to maintain strategic alignment between the organization and nursing practice.
Excellent, high quality patient care is much more than a saying used in many healthcare organizations. Translating these words into actions by every employee can be a daunting task. A culture of excellence must be initiated, and instilled into the core of a healthcare organization. Mission statements, visions, short term goals, and long term goals are useful objectives that facilitate a culture of excellence. As healthcare continues to evolve and increase in complexity each day, continuous reflection regarding organizational outcomes and patient outcomes should be performed.
As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, it requires people who attain great leadership qualities. The success of an organization depends on employees that can inspire people around them to achieve greatness and deliver quality care to the patients. Being in the healthcare industry, we have seen many changes recently. Therefore, by having a person with leadership qualities to guide others through these changes, while maintaining an organization that can deliver quality care is indispensable.
