Many young girls have to go through life being bombard with ads telling them they should look a certain way. Ads, music videos, TV shows, movies, and billboards all present one body type for woman to have. Photography has been used to preserve historical moments and to capture snap shots of life. Why now is it being used to give young girls a negative view point about their bodies? Several studies have been done to see if there is a connection between social media and negative body stereotypes. This paper will go over a handful of those studies to prove photography is being used to harm girls’ mental wellbeing. Background The reason why I choose this topic is due to my siblings. I am the eldest of five and I have never looked like the models on magazines. I had always thought they looked wrong and never held myself to their standards. I have learned my thirteen year old sister is trying to go on a diet to look more like a character from a TV show she watches. My age group for the girls were nine to thirteen years old. While older girls would have more studies done on them, I wanted to use preteen girls to find out when body stereotypes started setting in. In Photoshopping the Selfie, the girls were chosen from one grade in one school. Their results came from girls filling out a self-report questionnaires, there is no way of knowing if the girls had other issues that may have led to them developing negative body stereotypes. In Grooming ten-years-olds, they had a very small research group with the authors acting as coders. There were a total of six magazines used in this study, chosen by how popular they were.
