Negative Effect of Environment on Families NUR 542 July 29, 2012 Negative Effect of Environment on Families This debate statement will focus on the negative effect that the environment can have on families. There is a correlation between the direct environment in which a family lives and the degree of dysfunction in the household. This alone can be devastating to the family unit and to the individual members. There are some solutions that may help families to combat the negative effects that may have impact on their day-to-day life although at times change is not always easy or an advantage. Types of hazards often found in poor neighborhoods are air pollutants, lead paints, and other hazardous building materials found in old homes. Educating the family about these hazards and ways they can protect themselves and their children is imperative. Another important part of the nursing assessment should include an assessment of the family’s access to the Internet. Families with access to the Internet are empowered to communicate, educate, and exposes Internet users to more information than they would be exposed to in their neighborhood. Internet can feed their dreams and give them hope in what may seem like a hopeless situation with the access. Physical setting, effects, and relationships Families living in poor and neglected neighborhoods cannot afford the opportunity to live in safe, well maintained housing (Reiss, 2012). Living space is often inadequate because of small square footage or because too many family members are occupying the dwelling. Often there is absence or limited access to electricity, water, indoor plumbing, sanitation, and refrigeration. Physical housing conditions may include “dangerous wiring, poor heating, vermin infestation, and exposure to lead paint and mold” (Reiss, 2012, p. 43). The physical structure of the family home in poor neighborhoods can negatively affect the individual family members as well as his or her relationships with others.
