Throughout generations Cinderella stories have evolved to connect to the morals and teachings of the time. The base of these stories; however, never change, a beautiful princess must always act in a specific manner to attain the perfect Prince of her dreams. The many distinct versions of these stories told over time, are very important to early childhood development as they teach kids many morals present in their society. Early childhood development seems to be the most important part of a child’s life as they are being taught how to behave and interact between people in their society. Cinderella stories have a negative effect on early childhood development in boys and girls because they promote distinct gender roles. Girls are being taught to be pretty and obedient to their husbands no matter what. This thought process negatively effects girls tremendously because they get self-conscious about how they should look and behave in society today. This is distinctly present in the Cinderella stories told by Zipes, Sexton, and Plath. Yeh-hsien, one of the oldest Cinderella stories ever written in 850 AD in China. The Yeh-hsien version of Cinderella women are only described based on their appearance, “Yeh-hsien then came forward, wearing her cloak spun from halcyon feathers and her shoes. She was as beautiful as a heavenly being” (Zipes). Here, Yeh-hsien is only described as being a beautiful woman who looks like a goddess. This negatively impacts young girls because they
