“Modern technology is affecting our sleep. The artificial light from TV and computer screens affects melatonin production and throws off circadian rhythms, preventing deep, restorative sleep” (Volpi, 2012). Computers are affecting individual's health in a big way. Information technology is the centre of many studies that show the negative effects of computers on everyone who uses this technology. Of course, computers can be useful as a resource when used properly, however, just like a drug. Computers can be easily misused and abused. Leading to cases of addiction that are sometimes far more unbelievable than cases from drug addiction. It has been shown that many workers who spend hours at a desk or computer can be the subject of many long term health problems that can not be easily reversed. Computer access to the web allow for individuals struggling with a problem to vent it out online, anonymously. This is a temporary solution and does not help the individual solve it in the long term. Causing the individual to continue to deal with it online and struggle with it in person worsening such problems and prolonging the problem. Computers are affecting the health of many from children to adults, and causing many misuses and addictions to computers. Computers can cause severe mental health problems such as misuse, abuse and addictions. Computer users can be subjected to some of the same symptoms of drug users. Computer addiction is classified as anyone who uses the computer
In Zoe Kleinman's health article, “Are We Addicted to Technology,” the author effortlessly argues that technology has become an addicting pattern in our everyday lives. Kleinman interviews Dr Ramlakhan who works at Nightingale Hospital. Dr Ramlakhan informs that tiredness is nothing more than just a by-product of a busy modern life.
Therefore, children’s addictions are growing, causing their health to decline, while also making it easy for their privacy to be invaded. The article “Exploring associations between social media addiction”, by Xinhong, ZhuI, et al, talks about how technology affects sleep quality and health in students. The article mentions, “A total of 19.9% of respondents suffered from sleep disturbance. A total of 15.6% of participants had sleep durations less than 5 h, and 21.6% of subjects had sleep durations longer than 9 h” (Xinhong 1). Students’ lack of sleep can greatly affect their academic performance, and social interactions, as mentioned on page 2 of the article.
In the article “Are We Addicted to Technology” by Zoe Kleinman makes us really think, are we addicted? It's hard to say considering the author uses claims poorly. Her first claim was “Surely tiredness is a by-product of a busy modern life - children, work, hobbies etc - rather than relaxing time spent watching Netflix in bed?” To most people this comes out to be sarcastic which makes readers not want to trust her. Then she states that a lot of her parents have a hard time sleeping at night when on electronics, even though she had just recommended “watching Netflix in bed” She also interviewed Dr. Ramlakhan which could of been a lot better because all she told us were stories about patents in front of screens and a boy having a seizure by playing
Have you ever gotten lost in the Internet, swallowed by the constant updates on Twitter and Facebook for hours, when you only meant to be on for a few minutes? This is a constant battle in our society and technology changes and our use of it increases. It is becoming a bigger issue every day, and now it affects one of our basics psychological needs: sleep. Though I concede with Brooke Gladstone, author of “The Influencing Machines” that we can adapt to technology as it grows, I still insist that some issues that arise with technology are bigger than Gladstone portrays and we need to find solutions for some of the bigger problems that technology creates, especially when it disturbs a basic psychological need.
(Answer Prompt) In this article, “Are we Addicted to Technology”, by the author, Zoe Kleinman, issues the problem of technology. Today, the common issue in today's society is that people slowly become more reliant on their device rather than spending more time in their daily modern life. People are spending more time doing nothing productive with the use of technology, but stays in front the screen and have that gratification and that love of control that they are becoming more unable to stay away from the screen. (1st claim) It slowly affects people mentally and physically,(evidence) Zoe stated “ Surely tiredness is a by-product of a busy modern life- children, work, hobbies etc -rather than that relaxing time spent watching Netflix in bed?.”(effectiveness)Despite
In the article Are We Addicted to Technology, author Ms. Kleinman claims that we may be into our devices to much and has taken too much of our everyday lives. For people who constantly go into their devices, “ then you got the classic pattern of someone who’s in a fatigue cycle” says Dr. Ramlakhan, meaning people are addicted to technology so much, they have extreme tiredness. Dr. Ramlakhan works at the privately run nightingale Hospital, and what she has noticed is, many of her patients are in front of the screen all the time, even when they try to sleep. Another quote by Dr. Ramlakhan is “they go to bed but can’t sleep, or fall asleep exhausted and wake up tired.” Even when people have to sleep, they don’t...but instead they just go into
In the article, “Caught in the Web: More People Say Heavy Internet Use is Disrupting Their Lives, and Medical Experts are Paying Attention” by January W. Payne argues that using technology too much, has consequences that can affect the people around, and the individual’s health as well. At the same time, many people use internet excessively, and do not realize that, they might get further from the outside world. According to a research by Stanford University, demonstrated, that people spend on the internet about 3 or more hours daily. Many people are getting addictive to the internet, because they see it as an escape from problems, while others use it as a way to relax themselves. As people addiction to the internet increase, people isolate
Researchers say that the stimulation from the use of technology “provokes excitement” which causes dopamine levels to rise. Dopamine is a hormone in the brain that causes a feeling of wellness and happiness that can be addictive. These urges that we have interrupt family life and work, also they dullen creativity and deep thought. Research on what negative effects technology has on us was even done by Nora Volkow, the director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse. The opposing side argues saying technology has “benefits,” but it’s the overuse and abuse of those benefits that also has a negative effect on our daily
This informative article for Opposing Viewpoints in Context explains the problems with the internet and social media. The article’s main argument is that internet use can have an adverse effect on sleep and social interactions. The article first investigates patients that have become victims to the internet. The authors then cite multiple examples of symptoms of addiction such as anxiety, depression, etc. Furthermore, the article presents an individual that lost all social ties due to the internet. One of the authors, Larry D. Rosen, is a professor and past chair of the psychology department at California State University. Moreover, Nancy A. Cheever, another contributor to the article, is an associate professor of communications at California
Generation Z is addicted to social media because it is the first thing they worry when they wake up. They pick up their phones to see what people posted in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening. Dr. Helen Driver, a somnologist (with means the study of sleep), explains, “The explosion of social media and people staying on devices for longer – and taking them to bed with them – is a huge problem”. Social media has effected Generation Z’s by sleep because the light is from the electronics which interferes with sleep. Not only does social media affect the quality of sleep but, the quantity of sleep too. The next morning, they only got a few hours of sleep and they do not feel well both physically and mentally. If someone has issues with turning off their electronic devices in the evening, then they should dim the lights or and turn the power off.
The problems that technology causes can have serious effects on the lives of technolgy users. A study at the University of Stanford shows that people who use excess amounts of multimedia have trouble filtering out irrelevant information and have trouble focusing on tasks ("Digital Overload: Your Brain On Gadgets."). According to this study, the use of technology can distract people, especially students, from tasks that must be completed. As a result, the current technolgy generation will become less proactive, and is likely to lead to a change in the way brains of young technology users works. This study claims, “heavy technology may fundamentally alter the frontal lobe during childhood, how addictive behavior can lead to poor decision-making and how the brain is rewired when it is constantly inundated with new information ("Digital Overload: Your Brain On Gadgets."). The results found in the study relate back to dopamine because when the chemical is released it alters the brain and the technology users become more addicted to it when they begin their use in childhood. The danger of technology increases with younger generations and how they will function in the future because the consequences are not well known. Dopamine is a dangerous chemical in the brain when it is released in large quantities, and these side effects can lower the
Many do not believe that we have a technology problem in today’s society. But, ninety-five percent of people use technology an hour before they go to sleep (How Technology Affects Sleep). This is an alarming amount of people who use technology before they go to sleep. You do not have to be looking directly at the technology to trigger the pineal gland to stop releasing melatonin (Kim). Many also believe that lack of sleep due to technology does not affect how they do their daily jobs. Seventy-five percent of those over 30 that reported not getting enough sleep said that when they were tired that their sleepiness effected their daily work (Tarkan). For a school age kid ten hours of sleep is needed. Teenagers also need about nine to ten
Health problems caused by technology have turned into a big problem, especially among teenagers. People, especially teens, pay a high price for relying on social media, video games, and TV, especially when it comes to sleep. The internet has become an addiction, we need it like we need air to breathe. This addiction seems to be the cause of several serious health problems such as sleep deprivation, vision problems, obesity, etc. Addiction to technology has also made people lazy. Instead of going outside, playing sports and running around, they would rather stare at a screen, inside and the only exercise they get is sitting up in their chair and walking to the fridge for food. Even though the implementation of robots has reduced the risk to human life because they can perform some risky jobs instead of humans, robots themselves can create risky
You can become addicted to virtually anything the human race never ceases to amaze us with what people can get addicted to. When thinking about addiction most people commonly think about drugs and alcohol but the most common and modern form of addiction for the twenty first century is technology addiction. As we move on to the future technology is constantly improving and becoming a necessity for modern life.
When it comes to the topic of technology, most people will readily agree that it has been growing non-stop at a significant pace. About 16 years ago, technologies, such as computers were not a necessity in mainstream life. Since then, technology has progressed and people have become extremely reliable on. In the essay “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?” by Amy Goldwasser, she talks about the positive aspects of the Internet. Although she mainly focuses on the positive she also contradicts herself and mentions some negative aspects. “Twenty-plus years ago, high school students didn’t have the Internet to store their trivia”(Goldwasser 238). Those unfamiliar with this school of thought may be interest to know that it basically boils down to
