Media’s Negative Impact On Millennials
Media is now the dominant source of information and entertainment in the world. People use it as a major part of their lives, but little do they know how much it impacts them, especially millennials. According to the Pew Research Center (2017), “Today around seven-in-ten Americans use social media to connect with one another, engage with news content, share information and entertain themselves.” Today’s media is negatively affecting millennial behavior, physical health, and mental health.
Media is affecting the behavior of millennials. Children, on average, watch around twelve-thousand acts of violence on televisionTV each year, such as murder or even sexual assault. Several studies show that this kind of exposure can lead to aggressive behavior (PMC, 2003, para. 9). Media is also becoming a heavy influence on sexual morality, portraying sex outside of marriage as common and seldom mentioning its risks and dangers. Studies show how susceptible teens are to media’s influence on sexual behavior (PMC, 2003, para. 12-13). Drugs are promoted by the media to today’s audience as well. Celebrities are often seen and imitated by millennials as role models; but news and media often highlight the negative things that they do, portraying sex, drugs, and other addictions as normative (Mondal, n.d., para. 6).
