Music has always been highly regarded in people’s lives and for good reason. There are countless studies that show music’s positive impact on the human body and the brain. Regardless, there are some people trying to challenge this. School districts are constantly cutting their music programs because of insufficient funds and others believe music is harmful to the brain. Amy Morin wrote an article called, Can Music Be a Bad Influence on Kids and Teens?, in which she details the negative effects of music on the young mind. Despite her arguments, there are still too many convincing studies that found music to be good for the brain. Involvement in music is capable of improving emotional health, developing a healthier lifestyle, and increasing the brain’s overall intelligence. In her article, Morin argues music with destructive themes can be harmful to an adolescent’s health, especially those who are not living a balanced lifestyle. Sexualized behavior, suicide, aggression, and substance abuse are potentially promoted in songs through lyrics, genre (specifically intense music, such as metal or rap), and music videos, which can lead young people down detrimental paths. These arguments have substance, however there is much more research on music’s positive effects that counteract Morin’s findings.
The improvement of a person’s emotional health can be determined by listening to music. Goldstein mentions in his article, 4 Surprising Ways That Music Changes Your Brain and
Everyday music engulfs us whether we are watching a show, listening to the radio, or shopping at a grocery store. Music gives humans the ability to express oneself when there is no other way. Music sparks more creativity, emotions and brain function than any other activity.

Yet with all the wonderful things that music can do for human beings, could it possibly be responsible for them committing suicide, or murder? In this paper I am going to explore the chaos that occurred in the 80’s and 90’s when heavy metal music faced accusations that the music and lyrical content was driving adolescent and young adults to commit suicide and murder. I will argue that it is not the music or the lyrics that result in such violent behaviors; rather, individuals with underlying psychological issues such as depression, or anger disorders tend to be more attracted to heavy metal music.
* ““95% percent of Americans believe that music is a key-component in a child’s well-rounded education, 80% percent of respondents agreed that music makes the participants smarter; 78% believe that learning a musical instrument helps students perform better in other subject areas; and 88% believe participation in music helps teach children discipline” (Hurley 3),” (par 1).
Music has also been scientifically proven to lower stress and depression and improve one’s health.1 It is also scientifically proven that children who engage in music become more intelligent since music improves one’s memory and learning abilities. There are also
Music has been apart of society for thousands of years and an outlet for people's stress and other problems they may be facing. It helps the brain function and understand conditions better by breaking it down and trying to comprehend it. Music has made and is still making an impact on the lives of people all around the world. Because of its impact on peoples lives neuroscientist wanted to get to the source and have been looking at the brain to determine the exact effects of music and they can now answer the question, what effects does music have on the brain? “Nothing is more singular about this generation than its addiction to music” (Bloom 68). While every person in the world knows this to be true, no one stops to consider whether the music society listens to is actually good for the mind. What people don’t realize is that music affects people’s morals, culture, education, laws, and the way society thinks. Music has proved to be helpful, but no one focuses on that aspect of it anymore. The people that music affects the most only care if they can dance to it.
Did you know that music is one of the few activities that utilizes the whole entire brain? Did you know that music can physically alter your brain structure? Today I am going to be talking about the power of music and its impacts and effects on the brain. Throughout my whole life I have always had a passion for music of all different types and genres. I listen to music wherever I go and during whatever I’m doing. My mom would continually badger me about the music I was listening to and how it was corrupting my brain. After much research and many songs later, I discovered it actually has many positive effects on the brain. In the rest
Results of the study displayed that teens with a preference for songs depicting degrading sexual lyrics were more likely to engage in sexual activities themselves (Campbell), which is unintended and unhealthy for young teenagers. Teens who listen to suggestive lyrics that glorify drug and alcohol use are also more likely to engage in these activities. Music often portrays substance use as cool without showing the negative consequences of addiction (Morin). So many popular songs nowadays have lyrics that glorify bad habits and behaviors--making it difficult to avoid hearing and internalizing
Music is composed of sounds intertwined with melody and rhythm that can have powerful effects on a person. It can help people focus on tasks or calm the mind. Research has shown that music has beneficial effects on the mind, body, and health of a person. A journal article by Rastogi, Solanki, and Zafar (2013) refers, on the contrary, to:
In life, music affects everything many people look at all the different stories of teenagers committing violent acts and have begun to wonder can violent songs make teens violent? With all the violent acts that music glorifies as of recently many psychologists and parents alike have begun to wonder why certain types of music cause their children and teenagers to become so violent. Because of the questions that violent songs raise and why teenagers have started to gravitate towards violent songs more than ever before. Some factors that could be reasons as to why violent songs have such a powerful effect on teenagers could be that: teenagers learn violence from their surroundings, teenagers can have a history of violence, and violent songs give teens a place to vent their frustrations at,
Music has more of an influence on the people in the twenty-first century than it ever has before. Teens, especially, are surrounded by some sort of it in everything they are around or do. Many disagree on how music impacts one’s mental state and behavior; however, all agree that the impact depends on how the listener feels before and how they allow it to influence them.
In conclusion, messages/words in music, especially in rock/hip-hop rap music are sometimes dangerous to young people because they could lead to misogyny, violence, suicide, taking drugs, drinking alcohol, and other negative behavior. Contemporary music has as positive as negative effects on young people. The beneficial effects of music can express the fact that it helps many people cope with a bad mood, depression, sadness; however, negative changes in American culture, society, and music have led to increasingly dangerous musical lyrics that have created serious problems for some teenagers. Music can be a part of everyone’s life, even if they can’t play an instrument or read the music, they can listen. John Phillip Sousa was able to express himself through his music. Not only, did he love listening to the music, but he also, allowed music to touch his life, while he composed works of art and conducted and played in the US Marine Band. John Phillip Sousa influenced how those around him, especially the Marine Band of the late 1800’s, viewed music. His involvement in the organization began at the early age of 13 and continued until he was in his late 30’s. He wrote many well-known compositions that even now, hundreds of years later, impact those that listen.
