Along with the large and still growing number of smartphone and social media users, the time people spend on their phones has risen in recent decades. Today’s adolescents have taken a special interest in social media and smartphones because it allows them to chat and share photos with their friends and families. As the most prevalent users, many adolescent girls have become addicted to using social networking platforms or sites, such as Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Kik, and smartphones, such as the iPhone, Samsung, among others. Using smartphones and social media have side effects and only a few adolescent girls are paying attention to the impact it has on their mental and emotional well-being. Although these technologies have positive impacts on social life, the excessive use of both social media and smartphones affects the happiness and mental health of adolescent girls. Based on their social media and smartphone usage and habits, research has shown more inherent dangers for adolescent girls than boys. The Journal of Economics and Social Sciences reports that 96.7% of adolescent girls surveyed have cell phones and only 84.3% of adolescent boys do (Sisman, et al.). Adolescent girls are more invested in social media because they post pictures of themselves, while boys only show photos of the activities they are engaged in (Sisman, et al.).
