Statistics show that teens spend nearly 9 hours a day on social media websites, which is more than one-third of their day (Tsukayama). Social media, among teenagers and young adults, is quite popular. It is used on many different platforms and in so many ways which allows high schoolers to be constantly attached. Over the past decade, with the emergence of social media, the amount of time these websites consume from individuals has become greater and greater. Parents who have grown up in a different era of technology do not seem to understand the full effect of social media networks on teenagers. Young adults and teenagers who have grown up around the birth of social media often find themselves “protected” in a sense when they connect with their peers online rather than in person. Limiting the amount of time that teenagers and young adults spend on social media networks would limit the vast number of today’s youth that feels isolated. This anonymity and isolation allows individuals to engage in intense conversations while being physically separate from the person they are conversing with. This causes normal social skills that are acquired though intimate, in-person conversations with others to be nonexistent. In an article from the Huffington Post, the author quotes child psychologist Melissa Ortega: “They don’t know how to handle conflict face to face because so many things happen through some sort of technology. Clinically, I’m seeing it in the office. The high school kids who I do see will be checking their phones constantly. They’ll use it as an avoidance strategy. They’ll see if they got a text message in the two minutes they were talking to me.” (Bindley). The isolation that is so commonly connected to social networking usage is preventing today’s youth to be able to participate in an actual face-to-face conversation. The use of technology and social media is used as a way to avoid situations where a young individual does not know how to respond, due to lack of human interaction.
