Which of the following has the most negative effects on teens, Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat? Each social site has its own amount of negative effects on teens. Today there are teens doing things they have never done before. One reason, why this is happening is because of social media and its negative effects. Teens are starting to harm themselves and others because of what they are seeing on social media. There are different challenges on social media that teens can try, but the results never come out the same. For instance, the “Chubby Bunny Challenge” is one which can cause choking, “The Condom Snorting Challenge” which can lead condoms getting stuck in teens wind pipes, and the “Kylie Jenner Challenge” which can lead to cut lips. It is not only these challenges that are problematic, social media effects teens in other ways as well such as, cyberbullying, cat phishing, destroying relationships, suicide and sexting is also involved with teens and social media.
One negative effect that social media has on teens is cyberbullying (Henkin). Teens bully others about simple things such as their looks and their relationships. They even start to judge their lifestyle. They are bullying others that are younger or older than they are. There is a big difference with teens on social media and in reality. Cyberbullying can be seen anywhere. On social media it gives them the free time to do and say what they want to others because they won’t do any of that in reality. Cyberbullying is the leading topic to why some people do not enjoy getting online anymore. Some feel if they get on social media they are going to get mocked regardless of their lifestyle or how they look.
Another negative effect, social media has on teens is that some are starting to catfish others, boys and girls. Some teens are taking pictures from another person’s page and setting it as their own profile picture to make men or women flirt with them. They try to get in relationships with others without them knowing who they really are. According to Amori Yee Mikami teenages are using social media to communicate with their friends and not strangers . Some adolescents count their parents as their friends on social networking sites. According to a L.A. psychology professor kaveri Subrahmanyam says children on and offline have the same relationship on social networking sites and in reality . Another thing Subrahmanyam said was that teens use social media in wayś that don't harm their well being. Some teens that struggle with depression or other type of behavior are most likely to be bully or harass, and also take online risks such as sexting
The internet and social media have opened so many doors for our generation. Thousands of resources are at our fingertips that 30 years ago would seem impossible. However, this information can be more of a burden rather than a blessing. Scrolling through Instagram you will most likely find images of people with ‘perfect’ bodies in swimsuits. It is very easy to compare your body to these images and not feel confident about yourself. Now put yourself in a young teenager’s perspective, looking at all these images. Their main question might be “Why don’t I look like that?” This raises an issue for teenagers to be more likely to not be comfortable in their own skin, have lowered self-esteem, and body shame themselves. Another issue with social media is the anxiety that can come from it. Today it is apparent that most teenagers using social media platforms tend to be worrying about the color scheme of their profile, number of likes and how fast they show up, their following ratio, regulating the number of posts, the number of followers, number of retweets and many more anxieties. In a weird way, it can be easier to make fun of someone or bully someone behind a screen and not right to their face. This raises another version of bullying known as cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is the most common online risk for teenagers and adolescence (O’Keeffe 801). Researchers have found signs of depression from the use of social media (802). From repeated and extended use of social media there has been 92% of teenagers ages 13-17 going online every day in the US, negative things are sure to come from that usage (Dunlop 35). As just mentioned, there are major negative effects of social media on adolescence, including cyber-bullying, anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and depression.
