Snap it up or mess it up: The effects of media.

Taylor Hillridge got her very first computer for her 17 birthday. She decides to make a social media account. However, she soon finds herself as a victim of betrayal and bullying, afraid to show her face in school, she is pushed to her breaking point. Taylor’s mother thankfully stopped her. Her mother then took her cyberbullying case to the school system and state legislation to help prevent others from going through the same painful experience. The number of worldwide social media users reached 1.96 billion and is expected to grow to some 2.5 billion by 2018. The influence of media in our society can cause oppression by using platforms such as tv and social media to cause negative behaviors that can lead to mental health issues, cyberbullying, and lack of self-esteem.

The influence of media in our society causes oppression which leads to mental health issues. Social medias, like Instagram, has been associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying, and FOMO or the fear of missing out. (MacMillan 1). For example, when we go on social media and you see pictures of models and you see them being glorified by people, it makes you think “What's wrong with me? Why can't women like me be glorified like those models?” “Instagram easily makes girls and women feel as if their bodies aren’t good enough as people add filters and edit their pictures in order for them to look “perfect.” (MacMillan 1).
