Technology affects every aspect of our lives. We as humans use it every day with little to no thought. Humans are becoming more reliant on the internet and other forms of technology to receive their information and communicate. However, the increase in the use of technology has had a negative effect on humans’ health and development and communication. Technology changes the way we live our daily lives, the way we develop, and the way we communicate. Technology is a double edged sword. We’re constantly losing the information that’s just come in — we’re constantly replacing it, and there’s no place to hold what you’ve already gotten” (Huffington Post). As a result of the “information and technology overload”, it is now more difficult to form and retain memories. The internet has so much information right at our fingertips, that humans tend to not remember or feel the need to remember as much information. Being distracted by this technology makes it more difficult to form new memories. Even though the advancements in technology may not directly affect the information that we receive, it does have a detrimental impact on how humans are able to perceive it and store it in their long term memory. Technology decreases not only how well we will be able to retain the information, but the strength of our memory in general. It is imperative that the power and presence of technology is reduced.
Along with the detrimental effect technology has on our ability to form and retain memories, technology also has a negative impact on our sleep. This contributes to a human’s overall health and development because the amount of sleep that you get each night determines how well your brain and body are able to function. A good night’s rest is about as vital to your growth and development as a water supply and a healthy diet.
