What are the effects of Teenage Abortion?
At a young age, we do not have much say on what we want. A teen mother has part of the saying on the decision she wants to take. She does not only worry about how her decisions will influence her life, but as well as her child. Teenagers always take on their decision making without understanding the effects on them and their lives. About a quarter of all teenage pregnancies in the U.S. end in abortion. Teenage abortion is increasing a lot because teenage mother’s fear of not meeting their families standard and not being able to excel in their education. Also, they are not mentally prepared to have a child because they are a child

These negative impacts do not just affect one life, but as well as the mother’s family. Many parents will alway say that they have put so much for their children and their children are under pressure of just trying to make their parents proud. Sometimes it is not just all on the teenager, but also it may be the parents for not having good contact with their child. Not only is the lack of parental support a problem, but also can also be a problem psychologically for the mother. Depression can be present in both, having an abortion or continuing with the pregnancy. It is surprising that depression can occur after pregnancy, but this is referred to “baby blues”. This is when the mother is going through many stages mentally, such as anxiety and a lot of anguish.
To continue, the decisions we chose to do make a huge impact in our lives. The traumatic event of taking a life away from earth is very hard. According to “Teens Face More Mental Health Risks From Abortion Than From Bearing an Unplanned Pregnancy”, by the Elliot Institute, they state that teen mothers who do decide to abort and have an extreme growth in their psychological matter, have a higher risk to be settled in a mental health hospital compared to any other teenager. Teen mothers are not mentally prepared because their brains are not fully developed, which is why they go through an emotional trauma when they
In the United States “1.7% of women aged 15–44 have an abortion” (“Induced Abortion in the United States”). Twenty-one percent of all pregnancies end in abortion (“Induced Abortion in the United States”). Women most commonly have abortions before the end of her first trimester, twelve weeks into the pregnancy, however, abortions may also be performed after the first trimester. Abortions are quite common, but they also lead to numerous issues for the parents such as regret, depression, drug abuse and even suicide. The parent’s choice of abortion has lasting physical and psychological effects on the parents of the aborted child, even years after the abortion process.
Abortion can cause periods of depression in which the pain can encysted. Some women become aggressive or nervous, or even hyperactive. Anxiety can find an answer food such as bulimia or, conversely, anorexia. For others, psychosomatic reactions will take over with stomach aches, absence of periods, headaches, the loss of self-esteem ("I'm bad, I'm unworthy, painful for others"), the fear of not being pregnant again or anxiety of existential insecurity are consequences commonly observed. Some episodes of a woman’s life can relive the acutely suffering felt at the time of abortion: the date in which the child had been born, or the anniversary date of the abortion, the desire to make present the dead child, are conducive to outbreaks of suffering intensely lived as, for example, anxiety or depressive
In the overarching state of humanity, few topics are as important to the long term societal standpoint as abortion. Even more important and contested is the controversial subject of whether or not a woman will endure long term psychological effects or disorders after said abortion. This subject has been highly debated, with valid points made by both sides. It is important that we all look into these repercussions, especially since approximately 33% of women will undergo an abortion by the time they reach forty-five years old. This often challenged subject has many aspects. The main ideas that I researched where whether or not having an abortion leads to a higher risk for mental health issues, whether or not “post-abortion syndrome” is a
In today 's society, the rate of teen pregnancy is rapidly decreasing. This may be attributed to decrease in costs of contraception, costs and availability for abortion, and better sex education over time. “In 2014, a total of 249,078 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women in this age group. This is another historic low for U.S. teens and a drop of 9% from 2013. Birth rates fell 11% for women aged 15–17 years and 7% for women aged 18–19 years” ("About Teen Pregnancy"). Abortion is a highly debated topic today, for many wonder if the woman should have the right to choose. Those who choose to get an abortion are practically putting themselves on trial in today 's society. To understand why this is so, one must look at both sides of the abortion issue, and compare the facts. Abortion is an extremely controversial issue for many, and polarized, or split, into pro-life
Nearly 81% of women who receive abortions experience subsequent mental health problems according to a recently published study by The Royal College of Psychiatrists. The study demonstrates that the aftermath of an abortion can result in higher rates of anxiety, depression, various forms of substance abuse, and suicidal behavior. As a result of the study, it shows that women who have an abortion face almost double the risk of mental health problems as women who have their baby. This outcome is due to the fact that most women who are terminating pregnancies “may feel a greater sense of loss, anxiety and distress due to lack of support”, as summarized in the Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit reproductive health organization. In fact, a five-year study shows that 25% of
Abortion is one of the most talked about topics in teenage pregnancies. When researching abortion, you find many different view points and ideas to the situation. Some of the more obvious view points are those that are well known such as pro-life and Pro-Choice. Although people have abortions they don’t understand the side affects that come along with them.
Sharon Salzberg once said, “As we look around, it's very clear that in this world people do outrageous things to one another all of the time. It's not that these qualities or actions make us bad people, but they bring tremendous suffering if we don't know how to work with them”. The wake of devastation abortion leaves behind could not be described better. It is argued that it is the woman’s body; therefore it is the woman’s choice. What many do not know, however, is that abortion not only affects the mother, but the father, and of course the child. Guilt, anger, anxiety, depression, broken relationships, “numbing”, and even suicide; all of these are symptoms of Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS). PAS is the emotional/psychological damage women may experience after having an abortion. According to Dangers of Legal Abortion by Ann Saltenberger, women who have had abortions are nine times more likely to attempt suicide than women in the general population. Men, or the father, portray a range of emotions after their partner’s abortion. These include grief, guilt,
Minors and young women are the one who choose abortions most often. Many have lifelong regrets after an abortion..
Abortion has become a growing trend among the youth in the 20th century. About a quarter of all teenage pregnancies in the U.S. end in abortion. Teens make choice to have an abortion because of the worries about the baby distracting them from future goals and education. A teen considering an abortion influenced by her religious
Patel and Bisakha stated in the book, Maternal & Child Health, “…apart from the costs imposed upon taxpayers, teen-mothers themselves exhibit adverse outcomes subsequently in life, including poor educational and economic outcomes” (Patel and Bisakha 1). Millions of taxpayer dollars goes towards federal funding to teenage mothers; most teenage mothers do not have the financial means to take care of a child, resulting in dependence on the government for funding. Without abortions, teen-mothers are forced to drop out of school to raise a child they were not prepared for, resulting in poor education and monetary outcomes. Therefore, abortions become a necessary means, which allows teen girls who are not ready to become parents, a chance at life, before having it snatched away because of a
Unwanted children are an indirectly responsible for a huge number of family problems, such as child abuse, divorce, and poverty. Women between 15 and 19 account for at least 5 million abortions every year.In some cases, the child would be relying on a single mother while in high school, have a non-supportive family, and won’t have the financial resources to support a child. Which can be led into negative health and psychological consequences?
Parents must be included in their children’s decisions because parents can influence their children in a significant way. For instance, parental consent laws reduce the minor abortion rate by 19 percent (qtd. in Davis). “A 2008 study done by Michael J. New, Ph.D. shows that parental involvement laws reduce the abortion rate among 17 years old by 18.3 percent, among 16 years old by 14.3 percent, and among 15 years old by 8.6 percent” (qtd. in Davis). These statistics show that the states that require parental involvement laws the abortion rates decline greatly. Sometimes, teens want to have an abortion because they are afraid of their parents. However, if the law requires minors to inform their parents about their pregnancy and the possibility of an abortion, their parents will be able to help them. If a teen does not inform her parents about her being pregnant, this teen will never know if her parents would have been supportive and guide her through this difficult process.
• What are the psychological effects of abortion on mental health of female teenagers and young
Teen abortion is something that everyone should take seriously. One in four teens that are pregnant have an abortion. That means that every 25% of teen pregnancies come to an end. Out of all the different ages of abortion teens make up 18% of the 100%. 82% of all teen pregnancies are accidental. Juggling school and a baby can be very hard on the mother and her family. About one half of all teen mothers graduate high school and get their diploma. Most of the time mothers drop out just to take care of their baby (choicespregnancy).
Teenage pregnancy is a major reason why abortion may be chosen instead of carrying out a pregnancy. One out of three pregnant teens choose to have an abortion(Lowen, Teen Pregnancy Statistics in the US). Most teens who have children don’t know how to handle everything. They rarely finish high school, which limits their job opportunity, ultimately heightening the risk of raising their children in poverty (Lowen, Why Teens Choose Abortion).
