About 3.2% of the United States is composed of adults that are considered to support a vegetarian diet. According to the Oxford dictionary, the definition of vegetarianism is the practice of not eating meat or fish, especially for moral, religious, or health reasons. (Should I cite that this is copied and pasted definition?) Many explanations have been found as to why it has been proven to be a healthy way of living a longer life. Throughout the essay, the reader will find professional reasons as to why it’s a healthy option and beneficial choice of diet. Vegetarianism has properties of promoting a balanced weight while it could also lead to deficiencies, eating disorders, and other health conditions. Throughout the essay, the reader will be able to identify the advantages and benefits of having a vegetarian diet.
The first advantage of a vegetarian diet is it is said to promote and help obtain a healthy weight. A 2003 Oxford University study concluded that healthy meat eaters are more likely to be obese than healthy vegetarians. During this study, 37,875 healthy men and women between the ages of 20-97 were tested and the results were that 5.4% of meat eaters were obese while only 3% of the tested vegetarians were obese and overweight. The study also provided information on how the meat eaters observed had an average BMI that was 8.3% higher than those of the tested vegetarians. Also in another study conducted in 2006, data from the study found that vegetarian diets are associated and contribute to reduced body weight after taking on this diet.
While researching, the concept that vegetarians live longer was presented and came with studies to prove its legitimacy. A study conducted in 2012 on over 121,342 individuals found that eating red meat could be associated with cardiovascular disease and the increased risk of cancer. As well as this source of evidence, a peer-reviewed study conducted in 2003 found that diets composed of little to no meat for an amount of 20 years can have the probability of increasing one’s life expectancy by 3.6 years.
