February 2, 2015 Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was the first South African president in 1994, serving until 1999. He won the Nobel peaceprize and he was symbol of a peacemaker in 1993.Mandela was born into the Maida clan in the village of Mezzo, Transkei, on 18 July 1918. He completed his Junior Certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute and went on to Healdton, a Wesleyan secondary school of some repute, where he matriculatedhe had a rich sense of African self-governmentand heritage. His father was Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswawho was chief of the village and a member of the royal family of the Thimbu tribe and his mother was Noqaphi Nosekeni. Nelson was called ‘Trouble Maker’ by his father and at the age of seven he began his British education and his teacher gave his name ‘Nelson’. Mandela joined the African National Congress known as ANC. He became president of the league in 1951. Mandela spent many years in prison for opposing Apartheid, because the races were separated and blacks were treated as slaves by white people. Mandela was arrested for leaving South Africa illegally and for inciting strikes in 1962. Nelson Mandela helped bring an end to Apartheid.
