Introduction Personality is the different way in which a person thinks, act and feel. It is a broad topic including personality theories, theories of motivation, etc. Now this essay will be focusing on what is personality, the behavioural and social cognitive theory linked to Nelson Mandela and Dweck’s self-theory of motivation which will also be linked to the Nelson Mandela’s case study. 1. What is personality According to Ciccarelli & White (2013) personality is the unique and stable manner in which people Think, Feel and Act, which is sometimes confused with character. Now as mentioned above, personality is a broad area and also explained or viewed in different perspectives this is due to the complex and sometimes unique nature of personality i.e. everyone is unique and different. 4. Case study and motivation theory: Dweck’s self-theory of motivation In this theory Dweck proposes that the view people have about themselves has a very big impact on their success. He then says gain that the “self” represents one’s views about their abilities and relationships with other people. Carol Dweck believes that there are two types of people in this approach which are: people who have what is called an internal locus of control (people that believe that they have more control of what happens in their lives) and people having an external locus of control (people that believe their success and events in their lives is more due to luck and other people) (Ciccarelli & White, 2013). Dweck’s research shows that people with an external locus of control will believe that their intelligence is fixed and cannot change, they will give up easily or avoid challenges and they develop learned helplessness. Where else people with an internal locus of control will believe that their actions can improve their intelligence, they are motivated to perform challenging tasks, they do not give up due to failure, and rather they find
