Standing Up for What is Right
Can you imagine standing up for something that is very important to you and being sent to prison because of it? Nelson Mandela went against the apartheid and fought for equality in South Africa. He was sentenced to life in prison because of his association with the African National Congress and got charged with treason. Mandela got punished for something he stood strongly for and suffered the consequences. He was strong throughout his years in prison and demonstrated his strength numerous times throughout his life. Nelson Mandela demonstrated courage by not giving up in prison and pushing forward to have equality, acting with integrity by going against the apartheid, and made a difference by improving South African rights and many opinions and ways of improving equality.
Nelson Mandela’s childhood influenced the leadership roles Mandela took on. Mandela’s father was the chief of a South African Tribe. Leadership ran in his family. In 1930, when Mandela was only 12- years- old his father passed away, Mandela had to fulfill his father’s leadership roles. Mandela’s eyes were opened to what was occurring with human rights and segregation.. He continued to be a leader and fight for what he thought was right. He attended Fort Hare college was later suspended due to leading a student protest for discrimination. This did not stop him from fighting for his rights.
