Nemo And Beowulf: The Hero's Journey

FInding Nemo and Beowulf are two very different stories but both are similar because of the heroic journey the main characters went through. Comparing the two will give a different view towards the hero’s journey. The 12 steps are the ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal, finding a mentor, crossing the threshold, tests faced, approach, the ordeal, the reward, the road back, atonement, and the final return. The ordinary world in Beowulf is when Beowulf is born to the king in Geatland and is already very well known and famous. He is the son of the King, which is a big expectation to live up to. He feels scared and worried he won’t be as great as his father was. He doesn’t necessarily feel out of place, but just feels he’s not in the right place. In Nemo, Marlin taking Nemo to the first day of school is the first step of the journey. Nemo then leaves with the rest of his classmates and Mr. Ray. Nemo feels out of place because he is the only one that gets dropped off by his parent. He feels out of place and embarrassed because of this event.

She wants to get revenge. This causes Beowulf danger because he starts to worry about what the swamp hag will do. He is scared he will fail his hometown. In contrast, the approach in Nemo is when the duo runs into all the jellyfish. Dory gets stung by multiple jellies and Marlin goes in to save her. While he gets stung himself, he eventually does save her life. The ordeal in Beowulf is when he fights Grendel’s mom, the “swamp hag.” They fight a hard battle but Beowulf kills her with her own son’s sword. In Nemo, the ordeal is when Marlin and Nemo swim out of the East Australian Current to ask for directions. They think they ask a small fish but really it turned out to be a large whale.They end up in the mouth of the whale and they finally get out into the dark ocean, both very
