The classical Hollywood narrative is one of simplicity, linear continuity, and comprehensive storytelling, something typical American audiences were used to for most of films history. Quentin Tarantino, however, is not one to abide by the rules of cinema. The arguably auteur director reconfigures this narrative style with his 1994 classic Pulp Fiction. This film not only presented itself as a completely new and innovative take on what a film could be, but also created a foundation for which many films since have built their narratives from. These aspects will be analyzed through reference to specific scenes and elements within the film, and expanded upon in order to demonstrate their effectiveness. With its nonlinear narrative, Pulp Fiction …show more content…
The neo-noir aspects of the film include those of antiheros, dramatic murders and deaths, and untraditional cinematography. For these reasons, the film has been associated with the neo-noir genre by some, but the film could also be seen at times as a crime movie, a comedy (a dark one at that), a gangster film, or even a drama. By containing all of these potential genres, it’s pretty much impossible to categorize the film. Pulp Fiction itself seems to be aware of the genre categorization process, and aims to stand alone, away from the classification of films. The films break from genre was another trailblazing aspect of it, and was something that set it apart from any other film. Most classical Hollywood narration films are easily categorized, but Pulp Fiction proves to be one-of-a-kind and even goes on to inspire other genre-breaking films in the …show more content…
Whether it be Jules’ recitation of Ezekiel 25:17 and his expansion on it in the diner, Vincent’s conversations with Mia, or Butch’s interactions with Fabienne, every line they say adds to their character and forms who they are and how the audience perceives them. Of course, like any character, their actions are extremely important, but Tarantino utilizes the characters’ dialogue to add what action can’t. This technique makes the characters so much more realistic and believable. As a result of this added depth, Pulp Fiction and its characters stand out from those of traditional Hollywood
It is one of the only times in the year in which the whole of America
The dialogue puts comedy in the mouths of killers and other moral degenerates. The dialogue was also somewhat misleading because it never really revealed the narrative of the movie. For example when the two hitmen drive to their first assignment, they casually talk about McDonalds, they never really mentioned who they are killing and why they are killing them. We see that in so many scenes which makes the movie even more fascinating because it draws your attention to figure out the reasons of why things go that way but we never really get answers.
On a day-to-day basis, most people do not realize how much the Bible comes into play in our regular lives. The Bible makes entrances into our lives even when we are least expecting it. Even people who do not choose to practice a religion have it involved in their lives. From reading books, to watching movies and watching any sort of television, religious beliefs are everywhere. Sometimes the message is in hiding, but other times the message is right upfront, like in the movie Pulp Fiction.

Quentin Tarantino’s American crime film “Pulp Fiction” is organized through three separate but interrelated storylines. There is one story that constructed by three distinct stories. At the beginning of the sequences, titles are shown on the black screen which provides a recognizable source for narration. The first story-Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace’s wife- is about Vincent Vega (John Travolta) who is responsible for spending time with his boss Marsellus Wallace’s wife, Mia (Uma Thurman). I was a little late on the Kill Bill train and did not watch the movie until last year. As soon as the film started, I knew that it was going to be extremely intense. The same goes for Pulp Fiction. These two films directed by Quentin Tarantino were very different from all the other films that I’ve seen in my life. The mise en scene, dialogue, and music, were all different factors that intrigued me. I watched Pulp Fiction after watching Kill Bill and at first I thought that Pulp Fiction was an odd spin off to Kill Bill or that it took place in the same kind of universe because the worlds are so similar, the characters are just as intense, and the amount of violence was just as common. These are just a few things that make Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill similar. In this essay I will be discussing more similarities and slight differences between the two films.
The movie I will write about is the The Purge Anarchy. I would say have more than one genre. I would say that the genres are action, horror and thriller. Action movies are movies that have a tremendous impact, continue high energy and lots of physical activities. Horror movies are unsettling movies designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. These are types of films known to promote intense excitement, suspense, a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, and nerve-wracking tension. Thriller and suspense films are
Pulp Fiction is an iconic early 1990s film directed by the unparalleled Quentin Tarantino. The title of the film pays homage to mid-20th century crime novels. In this way and others, the title is revealing of the content of the film. The film follows a very postmodern style that often distracts the plot to focus instead on developing the characters. The cinematography of Tarantino further highlights the characters, at times not allowing the viewer to focus on the context due to the intensity of the moment. Two elements that play key roles in the tone of the film are real violence and race. Real violence is used throughout the film both to create and release tension. The element of race is used through stereotypes that allow the characters and the way they interact to provide social commentary about racial perceptions in America at the time of its release in 1994. The elements of violence and race are used to entice the audience to remain invested in an incredibly complicated and interwoven story with no particular plot. It is these elements that allow the movie to have no single central plot and yet still captivate its audience as the artful masterpiece it is.
All of the characters presented in the movie have a distinct personality, making the viewer engage deeply in the heart pumping action and drama.
In the mass media cinemas have just as much influence as any other medium has, perhaps even more, Reservoir Dogs does just that, with the use of archetypal characters, accredited actors, a stylish director and a modest budget this film reached high ratings and helped a genre now named Cult Classics come into fruition, it had audiences question many of the characters, quote scenes for decades to come, and give an insight into the world of crime.
The movie Pulp Fiction by Quintin Tarantino is an unusual movie that shows a different side to the underground crime that happens in a city. Such as having it focus on the people that work for the mob boss instead of the victims. And even having the movie out of order plays a part. Both of these things also help create the form and content of the movie. The form being violence/unchronological order, and the content being redemption.
The movies that Tarantino makes are not just violent, but have a great storyline, which he writes. His most famous movies include: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, and the newest one, Inglourious Basterds (IMDb). Other, less famous ones are: Jackie Brown and Grindhouse (a double-feature consisting of Planet Terror, and Death Proof) (IMDb). To this day, people still talk about how great of a movie Pulp Fiction is. These movies are well known for their graphic violence, and sometimes profanity.
A genre is a category, and in film it is a way to describe the best fit of the direction a movie will display. There are many subgenres within a genre that also help to give definition. Genres are used to support a system of grouping instead of disarray by leaving others to decipher it themselves. Scarface is a crime film that also has the sub-genre of gangster. Even though it does not dramatize a social statement on a need for change, Scarface fits into the crime/gangster genre because it distinctly characterizes the severe bloodshed and assaults that are customary in the world of organized crime and demonstrates the calamity of the gangster lifestyle; however, oddly enough with the way the murders occurred it also fits into the horror film genre as well.
