Neolithic Civilization: The Old Stone Age

Before civilizations first appeared, humans were nomadic, which means that they moved place to place in search for food. This era was known as the Old Stone Age. As the years progresses, humans learned how to farm. This transformed, impacted, and benefited the way people lived. Because of farming, people didn’t have to move place to place for food; instead, they can permanently stay in one place and created villages. This Era was known as the Neolithic Agriculture Revolution or New Stone Age. As small communities grew, their society expanded into a civilization, through agricultural benefits, domesticating animals, and new enhancements in technology.

Popular gods such as Osiris and Isis impacted the beliefs of the Egyptians. “Osiris and Isis, whose story touched human emotions…their son, Horus, later took revenge of the wicked god Set, killing his uncle. To Egyptians, Osiris was especially important. Not only did he rule the underworlds, but he was also the god of the Nile. In that role, he controlled the annual flood that made the land fertile. Isis had a special appeal for women… Like Osiris, Isis promised the faithful that they would have life after death. (pg. 28) The gods’ position controlled the way the Egyptians worked because they brought prosperity and abundance through fertile land created by the Nile; this helped the Egyptian Civilization to successfully rule over land. Osiris and Isis believed in an after-life, therefore, the Egyptians contributed to their belief by mummifying their pharaohs. Mummifying their pharaohs preserved their body with wealth and spices so when they come back to life they can be prepared. “As both a god and an earthly leader, the pharaoh stood at the top of society along with the royal family. (pg.31)” To the Egyptians, pharaohs were the closest thing to a god that they were labeled as a god or goddess. In fact, when the gods and goddesses died and were mummified, they would kill their slaves too so they can come with the pharaoh to the after-life. For the Sumerians, their leaders were the highest in the hierarchy. “The highest class included the ruling family, leading officials, and high priest. (pg. 35)”
Socially Different:
They differed socially by their ancient types of writing down records. In order for the Egyptians to write down their achievements and significant dates, they created a form of picture writing known as Hieroglyphics. Their form of writings evolved later throughout time to ideographs and demotic. On the other hand, the Sumerians had a different type of writing known as cuneiform. “Cuneiform grew out of a system of pictographs that priests used to record goods brought to temple store houses. (pg. 37)”
