Heterogeneous Network The operators are using better modulation schemes [1], better coding rate, multi antenna technique for increased throughput and efficiency. But this alone will not suffice as the resources are limited and there are near far problems associated with a macro cell. One alternative to increasing the throughput and quality of service is through cell split. To increase the capacity of a cell, a large cell is divided into smaller cells with each cell having its own serving base station and serving an area much less than that of a macro cell. A cell can split into micro, Pico and Femto cells. A micro cell serves an area of less than 2kms with the base station having a transmit power range of 5 watts. With further reduction in the transmit power, a cell known as Pico cell can serve an area of 100 meters or less and is mostly used to provide coverage in buildings. A Femto cell with transmission power of less than 200 Mw provides the least amount of coverage. Fig. 1 Network coverage based on cell size Thus while Macro cell can provide a wider coverage, in high density areas small cells can be used for data offloading, both indoors and outdoors. This architecture shown in Fig. 1 results in Heterogeneous Network. Thus Het-nets have been introduced in the LTE-Advanced to provide increased throughput and capacity [5].
