September 11, 2001 (herein referred to as 9/11) was a day in American history, which will be remembered as the most horrific attack on American soil. This attack, carried out by nineteen Islamic extremists, was associated with al-Qaeda, and involved the hijacking of four airplanes. Two of those airplanes were hijacked and flown directly into the World Trade Center in New York City, New York. The third plane’s target was the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the fourth plane was brought down in Pennsylvania where it is believed the passengers aboard fought the hijackers. This horrific day in history cost over 3,000 people their lives, and was labeled the worst attack on American soil since the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, two planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into the symbol of military and capitalism; the World Trade Center (History.com). This attack killed approximately 3,000 people (History.com). One other plane crashed into the Pentagon and 125 people lost their lives in that attack (History.com). That day, referred to as 9/11, left a stain in the hearts and minds of many Americans. These attacks brought out the hero in a great deal of people, but many heroes died on that day, and those heroes will never be forgotten. Because of this tragic event, millions of American citizens were injured or have had to endure the lasting effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (History.com). This awful event is our hope for the future because it taught us we need to combat terrorism better and we are still fighting this battle today (History.com).

The events of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 changed not just the American way of life, but the way in which terrorism will forever be viewed. Moments after the first plane changed our way of life by crashing into the first tower, it also changed the way people will live their lives for many generations from that point forward. For the first time on Continental United States soil, America was under siege.

During the attack of 9/11 Arijana Barun was on a plane from Zürich to Chicago. Like the other passengers on her plane she was very frightened and scared when the intercom came on and the pilot said, “The plane will be turning around due to an unexpected event in America.” She did not find out what had happened until four hours later when the plane landed in Zürich national airport. Two police officers entered her plane and said, “There have been attacks in America on the twin towers and they are no longer standing.” Entering the airport there were many T.V.’s portraying the same video, twin towers collapsing one after another. The images of the 9/11 attacks are still fresh and vivid in the minds of Americans who were alive to witness that tragic day. As a result of these attacks, the United States has undergone a transformation socially and politically as it seeks a remedy to the threat of Islamic terror. The years following the events were not great for the United States and for the West countries either. Even though the attacks almost 16 years ago, witnesses still remember it, like if were yesterday. The attacks also changed stereotypes for Muslims in general, which Al Qaeda was responsible.

In an interview, Skot McDonald talked about his experience on the streets a few blocks from the twin towers, “We started backing away and then had to run from a tidal wave of collapsing debris rushing down the street at us as the north tower collapsed,” (Liddy). McDonald and his friend were photographers and were staying very close to the twin towers. They woke up on September 11 like a normal day. Skot’s parents called him to tell him about the attacks. On 9/11, emergency groups in Manhattan needed to evacuate an area a certain distance around towers to maintain safety for inhabitants and tourists watching in horror.

September 11, 2001 is a day that no American will ever forget. That day has left a mark on each an everyone of us. That day is commonly known as ‘9/11’ and was the longest day in New York City. Everyone needs to know the dangers of each day, no matter if you see if coming or not. No one on that day know what life changing experience they would go through. Shortly after arriving to work in September 11, 2001, the attacks took place. Flights 11, 77, 93, and 175 were hijacked early in the morning and the crashed occurred shortly after. Not only were the Twin Towers hit that day, but the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania were hit. There are many survivors who shared their incredible stories. On the clear day of the 11th of September 2001, Americans and citizens from other nations suffered a trauma that will be remembered for generations to come (Halliday 5). On September 11th al Qaeda terrorist under the command of Osama bin Laden hijacked two American Airline (AA) flights and two United Airline (UA) flights that would never again land. All of the planes that day would not go down without a fight. Although there were many heroic people that day, 9/11 ended as the worst terrorist attack in American history because of 19 men hijacking four planes that lead to 2,996 people dead (Statistic Brain).

On September 11, 2001, 19 Islamic extremists planned and carried out terrorist attacks against the U.S., murdering about three-thousand innocent American citizens as a result. They specifically targeted the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia, and were planning on attacking the White House as well. The extremists hijacked four planes; two of the planes were flown into the Twin Towers and one plane crashed into the Pentagon. America had not seen such a world changing, eye opening terrorist led event since the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The terrorist attacks on 9/11 changed and shaped not only America, but the world as a whole. The effects of the attack are still evident in today’s world: socially, economically, and politically.

It was Tuesday 11th September 2001 when two hijacked passenger aircrafts collided with the World Trade Centre, bringing it to fall and kill thousands of people and injure even more. Immediately, newspaper, television and radio journalists were reporting, all with different views, opinions and facts. The ways in which the tragedy of September 11th was reported and presented, in newspapers, magazines and television broadcasts was striking and they varied greatly, in particular by "The Sun" a tabloid newspaper, "The Financial Times" a broadsheet newspaper and a letter published in a commemorative magazine marking the events of that day.
