I believed in your mission statement, especially, this part, “dedicated to provide high-quality, accessible medical care to underserved communities, regardless of their inability to pay.” I also believed that community health nursing is one of the best ways to reach the most vulnerable and under-served in our society. National Honors Society, or NHS, is one of the groups in my school that contributes in different ways in the school community and outside the school. NHS organizes college fairs, blood drives, book drives, volunteering activities, and community services in and outside of school. NHS gave me the opportunity to be a better leader and enhance my skills as a leader when I was assigned as the president of organization. Being the president of NHS is a huge responsibility and there is a lot of pressure. I have to communicate with our moderators every week. I have to look and search for volunteering opportunities that our group could do. But all these things are just small things that I don't really mind doing because it's a great opportunity for me to explore and be able to learn how to be a leader.

My vision: To become a leader and great role model with integrity while always holding true to my values. To continue to learn in each stage of life and always be willing to discover new things.

An organization that prides itself in upholding pillars such as scholarship, leadership, service, and integrity, like NSCS, will, without fail, create a space for people to grow into the leaders and the movers and shakers they dream to be. The space that this society provides for people to pursue righteous goals in the name of service and social justice gives a chance for leaders to rise. Whenever we hold events, I am never afraid to lead the group, input my opinion, or suggest something. Whenever we hold a general body meeting, I am never unsure whether or not to tell everyone about a local church’s volunteer event coming up or any service event I have in mind. For many people who are shy and do not know how to speak up, NSCS provides an inclusive environment for people to be themselves and become passionate for serving others. Giving people the ability to become the people they want to be is a beautiful thing and that is exactly how NSCS has helped me find all the success I have found in college. It is the aim of the school to train young men in mind, morals, and manners. Discipline is necessary in the management of a successful school. We are diligently striving to train and prepare boys for the duties and responsibilities of life, whether they enter college or enter their life's work in leaving here; to cultivate their minds, their hearts and their health; and to build up in each one an earnest, well-rounded Christian character.

My contribution to the mission of the Nurse Corps Program is I am flexible with all situations and excited with the opportunities being offered through this Scholarship program. Personally, by working in an underserved community, I will be able to spend more time getting to know the patients and making sure their needs are taken care of. Compared to the big cities, where patients are constantly admitted and discharged in a quick timely manner, there is not much time in between for the nurses to talk and learn the simple things about their patients. I do not want to have to live up to a quota of seeing so many patients in one day. When I first received my invitation to join the UHD NSCS chapter I thought, “Great, another honors society on campus that is all talk, but does not actually do anything”. However, after attending the Induction Ceremony I felt more drawn to The National Society of Collegiate Scholars versus any of the other honors societies that I had received invitations for. The officers were passionate and the new inductees were eager, and although many of us had never met before there was a strong sense of community present in the room. That is the key aspect of NSCS that I was previously unaware of, how community is a strong presence that accompanies NSCS and provides a lifelong network for scholars.

Having a personal mission statement is vital to a nurse; knowing one’s own values enhances patine care to the maximal potential. Every nurse should have a reason for serving others. Serving others for me is motivated by the desire to help others in their most vulnerable times. Helping a patient through a time period where they may feel alone and scared is a great accomplishment. As a competent registered nurse, my career goal is to become a healthcare quality improvement leader, a position that would enhance my commitment in promoting patient safety. I not only believe in enhancing the capacity of other care providers, but also in improving the quality of the healing environment for the benefit of both patients and their care providers. This means not only promoting collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams, but also building the necessary healing partnerships with our patients. I wish to become a member of the Presidents Society here at St. John’s University because it has been a goal of mine since my freshman year. I remember my convocation freshman year, I saw the University’s administration walking down the aisle and in the middle was a group of similarly dressed students. I inquired about the role of the students and learned that they were a part of the University’s President’s Society. After learning that they were a part of the President’s Society, that night I went back to my dorm and researched what the President's Society meant to this University. After finding out this information, I knew that President’s Society was definitely an additional goal I would like to achieve before graduating from this University.
