Nicolo Ammaniti explores the themes of betrayal, fear and maturity in the novel ‘I’m not scared.’ The protagonist Michele is a boy who is challenged by his imagination but as he matures he discovers that “its men you should be afraid of, not monsters.” Michele’s family and friends are who he associates himself with, these characters portray betrayal, fear and growing up despite the fact that they know what they might lose in the process. Michele often betrayed by his family and friends, grows up to copy these bad habits and forces them upon in his own life. Pino as the head of Michele’s traditional family made the decision to involve his family in the kidnapping of Filippo Carducci, putting them in danger but wanting to give them a better life once it was over. Papa would explain it all to [him].’ (page 49) This is a massive betrayal of young, naive Michele, changing his perspective of his father, “Papa was the bogey man. By day he was good, but at night he was bad.” (page 87) In addition to this, Michele had, “Sworn on the head of [his] father”(page 157) that he wouldn’t go back to see Filippo the boy in the hole, however he went back even after promising this. Michele felt torn between two of his most important morals, obey your father or help someone in need, he felt that the boy needed his help and chose that option. Pino gives a small but big word of advice in a heart to heart conversation with Michele, “Its men you should be afraid of, not monsters.”(page 184) This was a very subtle way for him to reveal to Michele that it was him who helped take Filippo for ransom and it wasn’t the monsters.
