Night John is a great story to hear. It shows you what slaves went through and how they were treated. Slaves were not treated kindly. They would have their limbs cut off or be whipped if they did something wrong. That isn’t fair for them at all. They went through a lot to please the whites that owned them. The whites were very greedy and cruel and did not care about the slaves. I think that slaves are very brave. They have to be to survive. They have to go through a lot of pain and work. I think that Sarny and Night John are the bravest. Night John ran away from the white house but came back to teach people how to read. Sarny is brave because she was determined to learn how to read. And because of this, she was able to stand up against Waller.
When thinking about the well known comedy Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare the audience is quick to focus on the wit and comedy that the play has to offer, rather than the understated villain who easily disappears in the background. While reading the play, one can posit that Don John is not the typical villain who acts with a specific motive in mind, rather, he is acting out of an obligation he feels to serve as an antagonist considering his position as a bastard. This is demonstrated in his dialogue, which reveals his inner turmoil on being chained to the villainous role and his willingness to act on any malicious opportunity that presents itself to him. This is significant in that, it provides another layer to our villain and causes the audience to think beyond the first layer that is easily presented, and into the true inner motives of the character.
In the start of Nightjohn chapter four, Alice is mentioned. Alice is slave that others thought would be sold soon, but, eventually, became a—forced—breeder. She was fiercely whipped by the master one night because she was caught walking by the white house—which was not allowed. Alice tries to run away, which reminds Sarny of the time that Jim and Pawley tried. Jim ran far—past the river, on top of the fence rail and back down to the ground. The mean dogs followed and found him. Jim hung from the tree; but, his legs were low enough, so the dogs could rip him apart. He was dead. The next man, Pawley, snuck away to see a girl; he did it often, but got caught one night. The dogs tore him apart—not to death; then, the master tied him down and cut

In Chapter 4 of Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, Sarny begins to tell about gruesome events that teach the reader about how rough slavery truly was. The first person Sarny mentions was Alice who wanders around without doing much more was caught near the whitehouse. She was then handcuffed and whipped, and when it was all set and done she had massive cuts on her back and all over her body. The next person she tells about was Jim who attempted to run away. That did not work out because Waller sent the dogs after him, and they tore his legs to shreds and left him on a tree to die. After Jim was Pawly who met with a girl every night, and one night while walking back after he fell asleep near the other plantation the dogs were sent after him and
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave and the movie Nightjohn are similar in a number of ways. First, they both are about slaves that have to deal with hardships and tough lessons. Another critical similarity is both masters were merciless and controlling white men who opposed their slaves learning to read. An equally important similarity is both main characters wouldn't give up in their hunt to become readers. Finally, both works share a mistress that was kind in the beginning, but later showed her real self as their cruelty came out from the shadows into the light.

Nightjohn is a book about a slave who has gone through so much, he ran away from his plantation, made it all the way North and became free, but turned around and came back to teach other slaves how to read and write. He taught Sarny how to read and write for tobacco the first night he was at the plantation, and helped her get through tough times by reading, writing, and teaching her valuable lessons throughout the book. Although Nightjohn was trying to be a nice person and teach them how to read and write if they got caught the consequences would be horrible.

Approaching the topic of how war stories should not be moral, O’Brien brings an interesting point to the novel by introducing Curt Lemon as a character who died in a pointless manner. As described by O’Brien in his short story, Curt Lemon is a young and free-spirited soldier in Vietnam whose life ends in an extremely sudden and horrific way when he accidentally steps on a rigged mortar round. Through the analysis of sentence structure in The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, one can find that Curt Lemon’s character demonstrates the carelessness that many soldiers in Vietnam displayed.
