In the beginning of the book, Night, Elie started out as a free man. Life was peaceful and great, he had no worry in the world. The book explains one of Elie and his family's day;
“Thereafter, life seemed normal once again. London radio, which we listened to every evening, announced encouraging news: the daily bombings of Germany and Stalingrad, the preparation of the Second Front. And so we, the Jews of Sighet, waited for better days that surely were soon to come. I continued to devote myself to my studies, Talmud during the day and Kabbalah at night. My father took care of his business and the community” (Weisel 7 8).
That all sadly changed once a man named Moishe came back being sent to the holocaust and he told everyone what he went through at one of the concentration camps.
After Moishe came into his town telling everyone what happened. No one believed him, they all thought he was crazy and was lying about everything. Then every jew, homosexuals, the physically and mentally disabled,. They all soon found out that they were wrong about Moishe, was wrong once they all got sent to Buchenwald.
“We received no food. We lived in snow; it took the place of bread. The days resembled the nights, and the nights left in our souls the dregs of their darkness. The train rolled slowly, often halted for a few hours, and continued. It never stopped snowing. We remained lying on the floor for days and nights, one on top of the other, never uttering a word. We were nothing but frozen
In night there were many times when Elie and his dad wanted to give up but they did not because they had each other. They used family to get through the terrible things that were happening to not only them but millions like them. Before the concentration
Next, the Germans stripped the Jews of their faith, which is another way they dehumanized them. An example of this is that Elie stopped believing in God. According to the novel, “Blessed be God’s name? Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled… And I, the former mystic, was thinking: Yes, man is stronger, greater than God” (Wiesel 67). The Germans were taking away the faith of the Jews by everything that they were doing in the concentration camps. They were burning children, shooting at babies, and killing Jews left and right. Since they were doing
Elie Wiesel experienced many personal and social conversions. One theme that relates to everyone throughout the novel Night, is freedom v.s confinement. In the beginning of this nonfiction story, Elie and his family are arranged in a ghetto in their town. The author introduces this by saying, “Two ghettos were set up in Sighet. A large one, in the center of the town, occupied four streets, and another smaller one extended over several small side streets in the outlying district. The street where we lived, Serpent Street, was inside the first ghetto.” The idea of confinement is now being constructed. Within the ghetto, they are not aware, but this was the last time they would see their homes or a place that gives them full contentment/ satisfaction.
Throughout Night Elie undergoes hardships like many today. “I didn’t know that this was the moment in time and the place where I was leaving my mother and Tzipora forever.” His family was
I think reading this essay is really beneficial because it can further help you understand the meaning of night in the book its more then just a time frame when it gets dark out. My three points of this paper really connect together to make a strong point on my conception of night and what it means. If you want to get a further thought on what night really relates to in the book I am glad you read my paper because it can help you understand a little more! Now what does night mean to you in this book? Is it just a time frame or is it something more to you? Can you relate to how Elie has felt throughout the
In the beginning, Elie was just like any other religious boy who believed in god or whoever he prayed every night in the synagogue. He was a happy and safe young prodigy who focused on school; his parents ran a shop with his other siblings. Kids were running in the streets; life seemed normal and tranquil for a while, until it wasn’t any longer. Once the Germans came into their town, everything changed for Elie and his family. Throughout the book Night, Elie goes from being devout to being skeptical during his entire journey.
“Why do you pray? He asked after a moment. Why did I pray? Strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?” (Pg.5). Moishe the Beadle asked Elie Wiesel some questions that Elies did not know how to answered, he prayed everyday, he was alive but he didn't know why, he breathe and he didn't know why neither. But the real answer only Elie could find it within himself. The book is based on real-life fact about how the Germans or best known as Nazis came and slave all the Jews, they took away their freedom and their happiness. And this tell book the the story of the holocaust in the point of view of a person named Elie Wiesel. Elements of dark and light can change your faith, how you believe and in what do you believe, but how can it be changed
In 1944, a twelve –year-old Elie Wiesel, in the village of Sighet, spends a lot of time thinking about the Jewish faith. He has an instructor named Moshe the Beadle, he returned from a near death experience, and warns people in the village that Nazis will soon come to their village and mess up the peace in the village. No one listens and soon people under Hitler’s rule force the Jews of the town and into supervised ghettos. Though Elie’s family remains calm, in the spring they are shipped into the final convoy to the Auschwitz and Birkenau death and concentration camps. Eighty some villagers on this convoy have to survive with little food and water. The prisoners were sorted out to see who could work for the Nazi’s and who would be killed.
Night Death, Sadness, and destruction fell upon Elie Wiesel a fifteen year old boy who was taken from his home in Transylvania and brought to a concentration camp where he would lose his mother youngest sister and father. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, the main character, Elie, was affected by the events in the book because Elie lost his faith, wanted to end his life, and being in Auschwitz took a toll on his emotions. When Elie first arrives at the concentration camp the reader can see an immediate shift in how Elie feels and his faith. On the day of the Jewish new year, Elie says “Glory be to God” then says "Why should I bless his name?
To start off with their different personalities. In the beginning of Night Elie was a religious little kid who wanted to know everything about his religion. He was very kind and listened to his parents. Soon after being separated from his mom he began to change. He became more independent. Although he still took care of his dad he didn't
In the book Night, Elie faces many obstacles within the biggest difficulty of being in the concentration camp. The reason he manages to get through those troubles with the support of his father. Elie demonstrates that his father is the reason he
In the final sections of the book “Night”,the narrator describes his life after his father's death as meaningless. In fact,Elie doesn’t mention that time in the book, instead he skips to the day he was liberated from the camps.A reason this he is affected so deeply could be that the bond between him and his father grew stronger in the camps.
In the Holocaust millions of Jews lost their lives because of simply who they were. Many however hid and survived this dark event in history. It was the year 1933 and WW11 roared on, some saw it as a war against countries but eventually everything dark and ugly came to the light. Adolf Hitler was the chancellor of Germany and had obtained great popularity with the German people. While beginning to attack nations he was also trying to destroy all Jews in a horrific mass genocide. Creating concentration camps and taking all that the Jews owned he began to round up these human beings as if they were cattle. The stories account for them as being kidnapped at midnight to being tricked into going to their death thinking they were going for a
One important part of Night is the change in relationship Elie had with his father through out camp. In the book Night, Elie often feels worried that him and his father are going to be separated from each other but he also feels some kind of guilt. On page 32, Elie says, " I first wanted to see where they would send my father. Were he to have gone to the right, I would have run after him." This shows how Elie feels about
What you know and believe in can change at any moment. We see a first hand account of this in the book Night. Everyday we see the jews face the horrors of the Buna work camp, as a result of this we see most people change their ethics. As fight or flight instincts kick in, people abandon their family and friends to survive. Elie fights an internal battle to keep his father alive and strong during these tragedies. As others around him give in to the cruel punishment, Elie himself wants to drift towards the darkness. When people are faced with such cruel punishment everyone changes to some extent. For some the change is instant but for most the process of breaking their will is extensive.
