In this poem, she expresses her love, through heart smoldering words, which could be felt through her speech act of exhortation. She appeared optimistic, about the continuity of her friendship and love with her lover. Her disposition in this literary act, unveiled her temperament. She favors romance and sexual intrigue. Her style of thought here, is intuitive and realistic because she talks about a tangible subject matter. She touches and holds the love she feels for her man friend with her words. This poem also appeals to the reader’s intellect and emotions because of her soft and emotional tone. Her words are not ambiguous or obfuscating. They have clear meaning, and are written in plain tense, which makes it easy to read and understand. Her poem is also built on comparison; she compares being lovers and friends, to memories shared, love made, tears shared and the significance of her romance with her lover. The poem lacked some rhyme scheme and imagery, however, it is divided into quadrant stanzas and follows a repetition of syntactical structures. Both capitalization and punctuations are present. This is a great poem that expresses the symbolic meaning of love and friendship. She teaches that, love is not based on sexual intercourse or transient things, but upon the love that we have,

When a reader grasps a theme throughout any piece of literature, he or she never clearly understands the intent without knowing where the theme came from. The theme that is portrayed in the poem is, often times reconnecting with a loved one cannot only bring happiness, but it can also bring sorrow. This theme was emphasized throughout the poem and without knowing the historical context of the poem, one could not necessarily understand where it came from. In the text it
The author persuades people to use their head before just using the words heart or love to give the word its true meaning. Carruth also displays what happens to words when they tend to be misused which is that they usually lose their value over time if they are not of great importance. Through his writing style in the poem, Carruth shows how people freely use the word “heart” and how it affects the meaning of the word. He opens and closes the poem with a question, refers to the heart as 'it' in the first stanza, and shows uncertainty of the importance of the heart in the first stanza as well.
Born in Tennessee, Nikki Giovanni spent the majority of her childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio, after moving with her family. Well acquainted with Knoxville, because of her family’s frequent trips to Tennessee from Ohio, Giovanni decided to go to college at Fisk University. Giovanni had trouble complying to the foreign rules and way of life at the University, which ultimately resulted in her expulsion. After being expelled, Giovanni thought about priorities and the importance of a college education. Giovanni negotiated a deal with the dean of Fisk University to allow her to re-enroll and graduate with the class of 1966 (Giovanni). Without her college education, Giovanni would be incapable of birthing her thought-provoking, mind-rendering poetry at the caliber in which she does. Shortly after receiving her graduate degree, Giovanni 's grandmother, Louvenia Watson, passed away. To help cope with the loss of her beloved grandmother, Giovanni started to write and eventually produced her first book of poetry, Black Feeling Black Talk. Wanting to publish her newly written work, Giovanni asked numerous publishers to give her an opportunity, but to no avail. Instead of waiting for the greenlight from a publisher, Nikki Giovanni self-published Black Feeling Black Talk using her personal finances (Giovanni). After composing several collections of poetry, Giovanni became a New York Times best-selling author and an acclaimed professor at Virginia Tech. Following the tragedy of the Virginia
Life writing is a genre that’s more equivocal than other genres. It has its own codes and conventions which help convey its own key ideas and messages. The arrangement of the codes and conventions help the audience recognize the connection between other life writing texts. One of the these is how perspective is used to convey the authors aspects of the real incident. This convention links to the one of the codes, language, where the composer uses languages to create personal accounts of a person’s life. All authors use language to express their experience. This verbalization is what links all life writing texts together.

I have selected “Seduction” by Nikki Giovanni and “Culture and the Universe” by Simone J. Ortiz for this comparative analysis. The lines in both poems are of different length. This diversity is vivid in the case of Giovanni’s poem. There are no patterns or modulations in the line length. The embedded content exclusively governs this choice. Both are free verse poems with an irregular and subtle rhythm. The absence of line breaks in Giovanni’s poem turns it in an uninterrupted and smooth flow of emotional intrigue and flirtation. The use of enjambed lines throughout the entire poem enhances this sensation. Ortiz uses line breaks to create uneven stanzas, slow down the rhythm, and establish pauses, which merge

When discussing love, people generally think about the love between a husband and wife, or the love between a couple in a romantic partnership, and that is one type of love that I will be discussing. In addition to romantic love, there are other types of love also. There is the love we have for our children, our families, and also the love that we have for our friends. All of these types of love share some of the same attributes, however, they have differences also. In reading and researching different types of love, I have found that romantic love and friendship seem to be the most similar in nature, although they have differences, they share a lot of the same attributes. I found that friendship and romantic love tend to have more similarities than differences. In this paper I will examine romantic love and friendship. I will discuss the definitions of the two, and what elements each of these have. I will discuss the different theories of love, and I will compare and contrast the similarities and differences between romantic love and friendship.
