Firstly, Nineteen Eighty-Four and The Inheritors are related because the societies in these novels control people through despair. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Party constantly manipulates the minds of its citizens and rewrites historical records in order to keep them inferior and to obey the government’s commands. However, even if an individual revolts against the Party, they will be tortured to the extent where they will relinquish all of their rebelliousness and become loyal once again. For instance, in the novel, Winston’s completely surrenders himself to the Party when the narrator states, “But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother” (Orwell 298). Winston, who initially despised the Party, is now beginning to love Big Brother as he was severely tormented by O’Brien in several ways, Winston is renouncing his desire to cause the collapse of the regime, which indicates that O’Brien, who is a Party member, has directly provoked the former through the tortures to state that there is no hope of forming a revolution in Oceania as the Party is the supreme power in the universe.
