Just the other day, Noah Biggins, who weighs 350 pounds, lost his remote in the midst of watching some television. Despite several wasted minutes halfheartedly searching the couch cushions, his efforts were fruitless. Soon his favorite show would come on. Mr. Biggins considered leaving the TV on the current channel, but then realized the news was fast approaching. Action was necessary. “I had to do something,” he explained. “It was either that or watch the nine o’clock news. That’s when they talk about politics. I would literally die of boredom.” Despite his incorrect use of the word literally, Mr. Biggins did indeed have a problem. There was an entire living room between him and the buttons on the TV required to change the channel.
The Omaha Chief Big Elk commented on the effect of the white migration to the West across the Overland Trails while visiting Washington D.C. He stated eloquently, “there is a coming flood which will soon reach us, and I advise you to prepare for it.” An estimated 500,000 people made the journey West to California and the Willamette Valley between the years 1840 – 1870. However, much like the first rains in a wet season, benefits were found in the first storm of white emigrants heading west. Native people were able to cooperate with white emigrants and benefit from trading with them. But the storms continued, emigrants as plentiful as rain drops came through the Indian lands and eventually, the prophecy of a great flood Chief Big Elk spoke of came true. Overtime, whites used up the limited resources of the plains tribes, depended on one another instead of Indians for help, and used force rather than compromise to clear the way for the expansion of the West.
“I suppose the only thing vaguely interesting about me was my Tourette’s syndrome, which isn’t really that interesting because I don’t do any of the fascinating things that some people with Tourette’s do, like shout out, swear words in public, or make animal noises. I mostly just blink or gulp a lot. I know boring.”

In Ashley Gilbertson’s “The Life and Lonely Death of Noah Pierce,” she talks with the family members and friends of veteran Noah Pierce to find out what led to Noah’s suicide following his service with the United States Army. It is believed that Noah’s experiences in Iraq attributed to him having post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and causing a change in his behavior during and after his service. Additionally in one of the letters to his mother detailing an engagement with enemy contacts and even though he claimed that he came unscathed with no bullet wounds or lost limbs, Noah admits to possibly having traumatic brain injury (TBI) because of that experience (Gilbertson). Exposure to the war environment in Iraq and the murders he committed had a direct impact on Specialist Noah Pierce in which it cultivated his aggressive behavior which caused numerous episodes that spiraled down to Noah committing suicide.
In his essay “Somehow Form a Family” Tony Early uses structure and tone to convey his use of television as an escape into an alternate reality and a way to mask his problems. In the years following his family’s purchase of the Zenith television, Early is faced with many challenges such as an absentee father, a loss of religion, a mental breakdown, and the loss of his sister. During all of these challenges television is there for him, promising him that life will get better.
In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor tells the story of how he got revenge on Fortunato. There are differing opinions on why Montresor is telling the story: is it a confession or is it so he can relive the perfect crime he committed? After close examination of the story, it becomes evident that Montresor is bragging about committing the perfect crime. The story is not a confession because Montresor boasts about his cleverness at luring Fortunato down to the catacombs and taunts Fortunato multiple times without remorse.

The death penalty was a feature of English law that the early colonists brought with them (Supreme Court Debates). The death penalty was first established in the United States back in the Eighteenth Century B.C. In the U.S 1,436 people were executed from 1977 through May of 2016. Most death penalty cases involve the execution of murderers although capital punishment can also be applied for treason, espionage, and other crimes (ProConorg). There are cons and pros to putting criminals on death row. Also, only certain crimes get the death penalty, and it’s not in every state.
