It is comprised of three operating segments: Devices & Services; NAVTEQ, and Nokia Siemens Networks. Devices & Services is responsible for managing the company’s portfolio of mobile devices, as well as related services such as applications and content. Nokia’s current CEO Steven Elop admitted that Nokia was not able to respond fast enough to the changing market and that had resulted in significant decline in its market share. The technology moves very quickly and it is difficult to predict market trends. The direct competitors for Nokia includes all smartphone manufacturers, including but not limited to Samsung, Apple, ZTE, LG, RIM, HTC, Google (Motorola), Huawei, and Sony Ericsson. With Microsoft as a partner, Nokia also faces competition not only in term of physical devices, but also in term of OS platform and the ecosystem. It is possible that Amazon.com, with its Kindle devices, may enter the smartphone market at some point in the future since the devices is not that different in term of technology. It is also possible that an innovative product in development that performs many of the same functions as a smartphone such as Google’s Project Glass will disrupt the entire smartphone market.
