Have you ever heard someone say the phrase "If everyone is special then no one is special?” If you have you probably know the meaning which is that if there is a movement to rebel then joining it is just conforming in a different way. Nonconformity is just another way of conforming because you are just following a different group of people or lifestyle, that's just human nature. On this subject, all time periods have had a phase or style that's rebellious. It may have used to be leather jackets or dark, emo styled clothing. Most of the people who participated in the trends of rebelling and just ended up actually doing it to conform. Think about it, all they did was conform to a new movement. It’s just how we work as human beings, it’s
The author, Logan Feys in his article, ¨The Sociology of Leopard Man¨, discusses the topic of society and being a nonconformist. He claims that people should be psychologically free and strong enough to live independently, leaving society and entering society on their own terms. He supports his claim by first comparing abnormal people and ¨normal¨ people. For example, in the article he states, “Plenty of weird people do have serious mental problems. But so do plenty of ¨normal¨ people.¨ (Feys 1). He then goes on to explain the dangers of conforming to society. ¨Conformity can be seen as the world's most common but dangerous psychological disorder. Living in society, we are under constant pressure to surrender our individuality to the will of
Nonconformity allows people to go against a prevailing rule so that they may do as they please.
The twenties, back in the day people would dress up all the time. The most famous clothing back then was the Flappers. Clothing back then was sort of like lady Gaga’s, but much milder. Back then, the people’s culture was different, so much so, that you might think it’s creepy, wired or perhaps cool. The people, of course, started trends old and new trends. The main problem is the supporters, like the people who want to wear the clothes or not.
“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth” John F. Kennedy. In both cases the conformist and the nonconformist face problems because of their choices. When you are placed in situations that can effect you, do you chose to conform or not? Boxer, a horse from the book, Animal Farm, is an example of someone who chose to conform with everyone one else under the oppressor. Martin Luther King Jr. on the other hand stood out amongst the masses against all of the people that tried to keep him down. It is undeniable that these two beings are completely different. One chose to conform and the other did the opposite. Conformity and nonconformity can be both good and bad things. While this is true, both result in long-lasting effects. Conformity is a double-edged sword that stabs those in the line of power, while also slashing the hands of those who reside under the authority. There is no way to avoid this.
A nonconformist is defined as “a person who refuses to conform, as to established customs, attitudes, or ideas”. It has been said that nonconformists cannot be ignored. To be a nonconformist takes a strength and courage that few posses. Some have been key in advancing society as we know it. Several authors of the Civil War period were brave and determined enough to take a stand against something they saw as wrong.
People do many different things in attempt to fit in, even while wanting to make a difference. However, that person could be too afraid to do so, and instead go along with the crowd. This is conformity, trying to blend in with society just because they’re too afraid to speak out. A person can live a fulfilled life by not conforming to society’s standards and opinions, and by living their life bravely.
Everyone follows the current fashion. People just want to fit in and be cool. In this generation, others make fun of the kind of shoes you have and what you wear. Therefore it makes us feel that we need to be like others and dress like others in order to be
Acts of non-conformity vary from person to person, and all of them result in different effects, either on the person who performed it, or those around the individual e.g. family, loved ones, public, and on a larger scale the country. These acts will either have a negative effect or positive effect, or possibly even a neutral effect where there maybe no real or significant effect. An example of a positive effect of non-conformity would be Rosa Parkes, whose determination to stand up for what is right and what she believed in lead to the disentegration of institutionalised segregation in America.
In everything that I do I decide to go the road less traveled, I make the choice to see something in a different way than everyone else. I choose not to wear the same clothes as most people do, I choose to always say what is on my mind and I try my hardest to not let what people may think of me interfere with what I say I and do. I consider myself a non-conformist for these reasons. Even when it comes to culture: I would much prefer the independent, locally-owned video shop where I can find obscure movies to the gigantic Blockbuster. I don’t choose to listen to Popular music or buy the CD’s of artists being shoved down our throats by MTV. I choose to find my own flavor, to disregard the overwhelming majority to the best of my ability. My feelings go along with Emerson’s again in “Self-Reliance”: “A man is to carry himself in the presence of all opposition, as if every thing were titular and ephemeral but he.” Continuing on the subject of conformity Emerson provides the famous line: “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist.” Stressing again the view of answering only
I believe that people should stay in the society, but still nonconform once in a while. They should be able to be free when they want to, but always stay with society. To begin with, a true nonconformist is someone who doesn’t change for the sake of other’s attention.
To be a conformist is to march to the beat of your own trumpet. In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, he is saying that you will have a much better life if you are individualistic and do what makes you happy. A good example of this in today's culture is Miley Cyrus, she has most definitely done what make her happy for herself. Most people thought that Miley would continue as the girl she was in the show “Hannah Montana”, but that was just a character for her. Miley has done a lot of things that most people consider crazy, but she is doing what makes herself happy and not trying to please others.
Non-conformity is basically not being a follower. People that are non-conformists are less likely to buckle under peer pressure. During the book Nathaniel was presented with multiple opportunities to join The Gathering, that almost all of the school had joined, he declined every time. Apparently Nathanial has been a non- conformist all his life even from a young age. One of the examples where Nathanial was given the opportunity to join The Gathering was early in the book where he had just moved to Cheshunt, on one of his first days of school.
Conformity refers to an individual’s behavior that is performed because of group pressure, even though that pressure might not involve a direct request. Many people want to think that they are conformist enough so that they are not looked upon as strange to others and nonconformist enough to demonstrate that they are capable of thinking by themselves. For many years, psychologists have been interested in human conformity. Usually when people are in groups, they behave according to how those in the group behave. That indicates that conformity can affect a person’s behavior and make a person do things that may be against their ethics, attitudes, and morals. The study of
On one hand, society argues that they are all distinct individuals and they are leaders who do not follow the crowd. On the other hand, a small percentage of society contends that many people like to think they are diverse, but in reality many are scared to stand away from the crowd and take action by themselves. In the article ¨The Sociology of Leopard Man, Logan Feys expresses that ¨ Society looks down upon freakish and extraordinary individuals alike and views them with suspicion. Ordinary people fear what they don’t understand¨(par.4). I agree with the author because some people do not understand that they conform all the time and they fear that they are not an individual. Feys also explains that ¨ Conformity can be seen as the world’s most common but dangerous psychological disorder. To be human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes, talents, values, and dreams that are distinct from those of others.¨ I would also agree with that statement by Feys because I believe that people want to feel special and unique, but in reality people conform almost all the time. To realize that conformity can be dangerous and to realize that you conform is important to withstanding
To start off with the idea of non-conformism, we need to understand why a non-conformist behavior is good for society. Speaking from experience. I enjoyed being a non-conformist person. It made me who I am today, a person who never follows society blindly but a person who challenges society’s actions. I believe every person enjoys being himself but it is the society’s pressure that makes them a conformist. A person will always show its true nature whenever he is free of society demands to follow ideas and actions. With this new age of loneliness more and more people are finding their true self. I didn’t start with a non-conformist ideology in one day, my experience comes from being alone at the start, being alone made me connect to myself and my identity more and more leading to enjoying it, I enjoyed loneliness cause I was aware of my actions instead of following
