Conformity AND Nonconformity Sucks!
To conform or to not conform is the real question. Google defines conformity as “Compliance with standards, rules, or laws.” I define conformity as someone going along with society although they may or may not believe it’s the right thing to do. The people who refuse to conform to society are called nonconformist. Although both conformity and nonconformity has its benefits, it can also be unfavorable for you. In other words, IT SUCKS!! And this demonstrated through both fictional stories and in real life. Two very good examples are Snowball the pig (conformist) from the book “Animal Farm” By George Orwell and Summer Pimp (nonconformist) who used to be one of my good friends.
In Animal Farm, Snowball
In reality, many people either comply with standards or rebel against them. The actions of a person can determine if they are a conformist or nonconformist character. The idea of conformity is how someone may comply with the standards, rules, or laws. The idea of conformity is how someone may comply with standards, rolls, or loss.A person that would be described as a nonconformist is Donald Trump. While, an example of a conformist is Oprah Winfrey. Both people have shown ways of how they comply with life.
Social conformity can cause issues in the real world if it is overused. For example, conformity can cause a bystander effect. The bystander effect is when people follow the crowd and fail to react when people are in need. Conformity can also cause people to do things that they don't necessarily want to do, but they do it because they don't want to be the odd one out. In the short story “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, conformity is a big idea in the book because everyone is controlled by how they think and speak.
Conformity- behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. When does conformity go too far? In Anthem by Ayn Rand people conformed out of fear. Everyone in there society has to be the same skill level, same intelligent and same physical attributes. People are given numbers at birth. People are also assigned jobs that they can not reject. Equality who is the main character does not follow the rules and is rubellus. He meets a girl that is just like him who he calls the Golden One. He make electricity and shows it to the highest people in there world, and they think it is evil. He gets sent to prison ,but he escapes because there were no locks on the doors. He goes to the forbidden forest. The Golden One finds him ,and they find a house in the mountains. They find all new things that they don't know what it is. But Equality plans to get his friends from the town and start his own society with his rules. Social conformity goes too far when the people do not have a choice for anything.
Do you conform or do you become an individual? Conforming is being similar in form or type ; behaving according to socially acceptable conventions or standards vs individuality which is a separate existence ; the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others to the same kind. Two very opposites, but you first conform and then further develop into individuals, you take what you learn from others and our own experiences, then finally mature into individuals.
After reading the two assigned readings and comparing it to the idea of conformity in full I have come a definite decision in my mind about the comparison and contrast of the two ideas given off in the first taste of the readings. I have seen that in “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks tells the tale of being not loose and free and having as little conformity as possible. Whereas, on the other hand, Junot Diaz’s idea of conformity in the excerpt we were assigned to read shows that the family’s ideas of conformity are very expected and it shows in their morals and they try to enforce it. Even though that’s not the case for Lola.
The individual must rebel against societal conformity. “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” (Emerson-quotesgram.com) People can’t just conform to what everyone else is doing and follow the path that is already made. They have to go where there is no path and make their own trail for others to follow if they want. It may be more difficult than just follow where there is already a path, but sometimes it is better to do things the hard way, because in the end it pays off in different ways. “Simplify, simplify.” (Thoreau 383) If we don’t want to conform to what the society wants, then we have to simplify our lives to make them easier on our own. If people can’t simplify their lives, then they will think that
A conformist is a person just accepts the normal behavior of others without speaking out. These people affect their environments positively and negatively. They can impact their environments in a positive way by not saying anything and going through the motions. This prevents their “leaders” from retaliating harmfully due to their willingness to speak out. But with the positive it is also a negative in the situation. The conformist and his or hers will continue to be disrespected as a whole.
Many obey to conformity because they are afraid to speak their own mind afraid to be alone. Going against conformity means you are making the bold decision to stand up against the majority of people alone speaking your mind and thoughts that those around you do not agree on. In many cases obeying to higher authority is the best way to go, but disobeying is needed in your day to day life. In the article “The Power Trip” by Jonah Lehrer mentions that leaders are chosen by their good traits, but their traits disappears when they raise to power. Instead of being nice, honest, and outgoing they become mean, cruel, and hostile towards others (Lehrer 654).
So many people think that following societies standards are a good thing which some are, but they shouldn’t cost us changing who we are. People that do this are called conformist, which are people that follow or are with society. Then there are people that are like leopard man, a nonconformist, which are people that are considered
Should I conform? Should I rebel? This has and always will be, a constant battle struggled individually, or as a society. A certain amount of conformity needs to exist in life in order to avoid disorder. This is the reason we have laws. Take those laws, rules, control, or even expectations, to an extreme, and some form of rebellion is probable. Struggle with these opposites, and you have a catalyst for war, or perhaps, being fired from a job. Literature represents life, and this theme can be found at the root of many literary works.
conforming removes conflict. Take away opinions, likes, dislikes, and everyone is happy. Tell the people
Obedience and Conformity Both obedience and conformity involve social pressure in obedience the pressure comes from behaving as you are instructed to do; whereas in conformity the pressure comes from group norms Behaviour in obedience is determined by social power, whereas in conformity it is influenced mostly by the need for acceptance. In nearly all societies, certain people are given power and authority over others. Our society, for example, parents, teachers, and managers are invested with various degrees of authority. Most of the time, this does not cause any problems.
I decided to break a social norm in my house by asking my parents for their permission before doing anything in my own house, for example I would ask to use the restroom or if it was okay for me to get a drink. I only asked for permission to preform those two tasks. After a day it was very obvious to everyone in my home that something was going on with me, but when confronted about what I was doing by my family I refused to conform to their group pressure and inform them. Everyone in my household urged me to conform and stop asking such ridiculous questions; conformity is behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. Examples of conformity can be found everyday in life from the way we dress to the way we talk, a specific example is when one persons’ clapping
Many people feel obligated to follow the crowd. However, some people have courage to not follow what the crowd is doing, it is called nonconformity. One person being a nonconformist can change someone's life everyday. Some short stories that we read in English class have showed student examples of non-conformity and conformity. It is people's bravery in standing up for what they believe and is always questioning the status quo that has the power to bring a positive change to society.
I hate conforming to norms. I love doing things with the people around me, but I do not want to do something just because the people around me are doing that thing. An example of this would be my passion for justice. I am really passionate about justice and about helping the poor, but I am alway examining myself to make sure that I do not get swept up into the “justice is a hobby” mentality that is currently dominating our society. It is currently a popular thing to care about the poor and oppressed and we integrate this desire to help people into our own personal identities; justice is like a pin that I would stick on my backpack, or a bumper sticker I would paste on the back of my laptop. The environment in which I grew up is what has caused me to dislike following movements or traditions just because they are popular.
