As I note in BIO posted on the class wall, I come from the corporate security world. When I left, I found myself working for a non-profit organization as an advocate for adults of all ages with all types of developmental disabilities. My team and I work with our amazing clients on a daily basis to make sure that they are able to enjoy and live the fullest lives possible in the mainstream community they reside in. We provide, advocacy, education, housing, employment, medical assistance, transportation and pretty much any other basic life tool or skills training needed to be a productive member in their communities. While, folks in the mainstream community are more accepting of my clients with developmental disabilities, they sometimes not as
I continually demonstrate a highly positive and contemporary attitude towards people with disabilities, coupled with an advanced understanding and knowledge of disabilities and their broader impacts. During my career, I have provided service to a diverse array of individuals. Specifically, in my current role as an APS 4 Compliance Officer with Centrelink, I have been responsible for providing friendly, efficient service to a range of customers, including people with disabilities. In doing so, I have gained significant insight into the many challenges and impacts of disabilities, and therefore aim to display a contemporary, supportive, and respectful attitude. Moreover, I possess excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of empathy, allowing me to easily relate to others, and help them to accomplish their goals. Such skills are highlighted by my qualifications, as I hold a certification in Human Skills and Critical Thinking from New Intelligence. Additionally, I am a highly skilled interviewer, with the proven ability to develop and maintain exceptional professional relationships. As an APS 5 Investigator, I conducted records of interview, as well as taking numerous witness statements. Given this, I can
As an advocate for the developmental disabled in my current role in my community, I work hard at educating the mainstream community as well as my own team and staff about the mistruths about the DD community. Who these amazing clients are. What they bring to the community. What their strengths are and what their needs may be. When one of my clients has a behavior in the group community, their employment, or home setting or the general community, I work with my clients first on deescalating the unwanted behavior then educating them on how they can work on not reaching that point. How we can create a positive behavior instead. This often can include those in the setting that the behavior occurred. No matter what the situation, the keys to helping
Nonprofits can also legally advocate for a social justice agenda through activities that are neither political campaigning nor excessive lobbying, therefore eliminating the consequence of losing their tax exemption status. Some lobbying activities that are considered acceptable are nonpartisan analysis, in-depth study or research on a policy issues; discussions of broad social problems; responding to a written request from a legislative body; providing education materials to legislators or the public that are unbiased; meeting with a legislator to discuss social problems without referring to a particular legislative proposal; advocating for better implementation of existing laws and meeting with your representatives to discuss your program.
The Public Theater has been a staple of the New York City theater community for over 50 years now. Part of The Public’s core values include providing great content for the community and making sure that content is accessible to as wide an audience as possible. This mission is highly appealing to potential donors and foundation committee’s as it provides a very transparent place for donations to land and be used to directly improve the community. Through a clear mission, a great legacy and a proven track record of community centered engagement, The Public Theater’s clearly has a great capacity to fundraise.
As an assignment for a public radio station I volunteered at, my partner and I were assigned to get sound bites. The Ralph’s in Downtown L.A. was featuring Homegirl Industries mango salsa in their deli section (Hirsch, 2009). At the event, most of the news outlets there focused on getting quotes from mayor Villaraigosa. This made it easier for my partner and I to get quotes from young adults that were part of Homeboy Industries. Through this assignment, I learned about the non-profit group and its goal to transform the lives of former gang members. This paper focuses on the non-profit organization Homeboy Industries and its contributions to the cultural region. The beginning focuses on the brief history of gang activity in Los Angeles, and
As the librarian for my city during a time when the city is struggling and not connecting, I would need to make some changes to the program. I would begin by looking at the neighborhood including the demographics. As the librarian, I would not be able to dedicate myself fully to organizing or implanting changes within the library so, I would need to consider hiring volunteers that can assist with collaborating with other city agencies and local non-profit organizations.
In a perfect world, every division in a company would have no problem getting along with each other. However, this is not a perfect world and not everyone will get along just because they are employed under the same enterprise. When the chief executive officer (CEO) asks the head of human resources (HR) to partner with the finance department on a non-profit project, it is at this point for HR and finance formulate a strategic initiative to complete the assignment. The paper examines the initial planning process for non-profits, anticipation of non-profit planning, and success in non-profit planning.
CUPON organizations are all-volunteer non-profit community-based organizations with hundreds of members. The organizations were formed to orchestrate awareness of building and zoning deviations that adversely affect the character of our diverse community. We are concerned about the decisions being made that can endanger our residents and first responders.
Volunteerism plays a critical role in addressing community, national, and global issues. Volunteerism not only enables the smooth functioning of many organizations, it also contributes to the maintenance of social cohesion. Individuals give their time and services willingly without expecting any compensation or benefits. Over the past few years, volunteerism in the U.S. has declined from an estimated 50% of U.S. adults collectively logging volunteer hours equivalent to five million fulltime jobs to a recent low of only 25% of Americans engaged in volunteer work according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014. The workforce behind many nonprofit organizations is the blood, sweat, and tears of a sizeable volunteer base. For example, the
It was warm that day. I walked to the bus with my hands shaking and eyes wide. I knew this was going to be a big day for me but I had no idea that Saturday would be the first day of the rest of my life. At first glance, this may seem like a big statement but my first day of volunteering with Camp A.N.C.H.O.R. (Assisting the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation) sent me on a journey with social justice that I am still taking. At 16 years old I thought I was going to go in and change lives but, the individuals I met ended up changing mine. I didn’t know what I was doing or much about the populations I was dealing with. However, I did know the individuals I was working with were incredibly funny, smart, talented, and had so much going for them except for one thing, their disability. I realized that these individuals were being portrayed as incompetent, unintelligent, and incapable because of one small aspect of their life. After speaking to some of their parents over the course of two years, I realized the immense difficulties these families go through. My initial reaction was anger, and then it dawned on me. If I want people to treat me like an individual and give me full human rights, have access to a public education, not receive discrimination during job interviews, they should have the exact same rights. This is not something they choose to take on each day. It is a part of their life that they deal with everyday as so many of us do with other
In today’s world there are hundreds of thousands of non-profit organizations (NPOs) established at the local, regional, national and international level, and their influence is increasing. Non-profit organizations even considered the third sector of the economy (the first two is the public and private, or commercial). It is believed that they have a special role in development of civil society. In those countries, which have largely shaped the system of legislative regulation of the sector (USA, UK, Australia, etc); the state spends huge sums on research programs in the field of standardization of the NPO.
There used to be a time when zoos used to be full of animals. A time when extinction was not a problem. That was the past. Today, zoos all around the world are missing many animals such as the African elephant or the dodo bird. All of these wonderful animals became extinct because we were careless enough to let them all die. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is an organization that is trying to prevent extinction from happening. WWF is an environmental organization dedicated to “protecting the world’s wildlife and wetlands” ("World Wildlife Fund"). It is one of the largest private supported conservation organizations in the world, with support from one million members in just the United States. WWF was formed on September 11, 1961 in Morges,
A non-profit organization focuses on other purposes that are important to that specific non-profit organization. Almost all non-profits dedicate themselves to advocating for a specific cause or point of view. Most non-profits have a certain about of revenue which may come from outside sources such as members or donations. These non-profit organizations use these to further achieve its mission. Organizations that are considered non-profit are granted tax exempt status. This means that they do not pay an income tax on the money earned forms donations or other forms of fundraising. There are thousands of non-profits that exist in the world, United States, and even your own community. Some examples of certain types of these types of organizations
World Vision, founded in the USA in 1950 by a young pastor Robert Pierce, is one of the largest relief and development organizations in the world whose total revenue coming grants, product and foreign donations is about $2.6 billion.
They say people are scared of change, and you can clearly see this when it comes to people with disabilities. Many schools, companies, and associations refuse to let disabled people be a part of them. Once again, they say these people are not capable of taking care of their disability. Most people with disabilities have been trained to properly handle their limitation and take care of themselves. They have lived with this for quite a time and they are completely capable of looking after their health. Although some disabilities require extra care and assistance, I think it is wrong to not give them the job if they are fully qualified and able to do the work. I am aware of schools in my city that refuses do take disabled people of any kind, because they say they don’t want people that are not “normal”. Further, there are schools that do accept disabled people, but even if you are able to, you are not allowed to do sport or any physical activity at school. Part of this, is the fact that people think if they cannot see your disability, you do not have it. Not all disabilities are physical, but rather a serious chronic disease. Some places offer special care for disabled people, for example, a fridge to keep your medicine or extra time in an exam if something goes wrong. There are many people that say you are abusing the system. I experienced something very similar, where I took a
