There are many non-profit organizations that help people ranging from international, like the Lions Club, to small culture-specific, like the Lower Columbia Hispanic Council here in Astoria. Now more than ever does the community need these organizations who help those in need, no matter what a person's status is and the LCHC is a primary example of this. Sadly to our dismay not all of these organizations can last forever with members that are already old enough that they are great-grandparents, which goes to show that even my generation isn't fully aware of how beneficial they are to our growth and development. Just this last year the Lions Club helped with Jordans Walk for Wellness and gave around 200 eye screenings from John Jacob Astor to
Throughout my career in the social sector I worked with a variety of for-profit companies; over the last few years I’ve noticed interesting trends. Corporations are changing how they structure and evaluate philanthropic partnerships and fewer and fewer organizations are opting to donate through traditional methods. Social entrepreneurs are even integrating philanthropy into their business models. Just consider, big names such as Toms and Seventh Generation and newer start ups like Bombas (a sock company that donates socks one-for-one for every pair they sell). One-time event sponsorship and foundation giving seems to be losing ground to newer, innovative community investment strategies. These shifts have encouraged non-profits, including
When looking at non-profit organizations and how they benefit society, you first have to know what a non-profit organization does. A quote from Nonprofit management 101 says:
Collaboration among organization members and community stakeholders is very important, we must begin to study and understand nonprofits not merely as organizations housed within four walls but as catalysts that work within, and change, entire systems. The most effective of these groups employ a strategy of leverage, using government, business, the public, and other nonprofits as forces for good, helping them deliver even greater social change than they could possibly achieve alone (Crutchfield, 2012). There is also an understanding that community partnerships and assistance from caring individuals will be of a great benefit to the organization and the young men they serve. The different chapters in the organization are funded through member dues, grants and contributions from corporations, foundations, individuals and combined federal
Nonprofit companies include American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and the Food Bank, just to name a few. An administrative assistant might organize functions such as planning a fund raiser or collecting donations on top of office tasks such as answering phone calls, planning meetings, recruiting, and training new workers or volunteers, and computer work. For example, an administrative assistant at the Food Bank may work the front desk answering phones and inputting volunteer hours on the computer while organizing the canned food drive for the upcoming holidays.

Founded in 1942, the Ad Council is non-profit organization that delivers and benefits the lives of society every day. This organization works with tons of companies to promote powerful messages that would have an extreme impact across the country. The Ad Council continues to be the dominant producer in the United States for public service announcements changing the lives of many.
The NCAA is a non-profit organization that organizes and executes college sports, which includes football, basketball, etc. Key word from the previous sentence would be “non-profit organization”. What kind of “non-profit organization” makes as much money as they do? The NCAA players bring in great revenue with their outstanding efforts in bringing their team up to the top, because that is what the fans like to watch. Now does it seem fair that the NCAA does not give the players back any money at all to the players that actually bring the money in? In simple terms the NCAA makes large amounts of profits and needs to start distributing some of the money to the players (History of College Basketball, 2013). According to another article, the
Grand Junction, Colorado is a town in Western Colorado that has taken steps to excel in the health care field by providing cost effective and efficient care to their community. In lecture this week, we have learned that the key system concepts are: shared vision, shared reality, people, parts, interrelationships, leverage, adaptability and iterative learning.1 The article: Grand Junction, Colorado: A Health Community That Works, is an example of a patient-centered medical home that currently exists in the United States, and should be looked at as a possible solution to our current health care overspending crisis. I believe that the health care provided in Grand Junction, Colorado has excelled in all these concepts and will discuss their
A not-for-profit organization responsible for the provision of leisure services would be Boys & Girls Club. This is an organization that truly holds up the values of being a not-for-profit organization. Their mission is "To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens" (Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 2013). With a mission such as this it is obvious that this is an organization that is about the youth and enabling them to grow as individuals.
Until spending time in the nonprofit program at Johnson, I never considered the many different tasks associated with starting a nonprofit. Additionally, through growing up at a long-established nonprofit, I took for granted the work involved in establishing it as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The IRS website provides explanation for the many these required tasks needed to file for tax-exemption status. Filing the articles of incorporation and establishing bylaws remain crucial for an organization to receive recognition as a legal entity. However, establishing a nonprofit involves a great deal more than simply attaining tax-exemption status. Tschirhart and Bielefeld highlight many of these aspects, such as developing the mission and vision statements of the organization (Tschirhart and Bielefeld 49). As the reading from last week discussed, evaluating and acquiring resources for an organization should stem from the mission of an organization. Even more so, in order for that to take place, the organization needs established with a mission that will keep it rooted in its cause and a vision
There is a non-profit organization located in Greenville NC called, The Junior Women’s Association of Greenville, NC. They have a board of directors in addition to members of the organization. They state on their website, http://www.jwagreenville.org/ , that this organization is comprised “of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective leadership of trained volunteers.” I feel that in order to serve with full potential on any board of directors one must feel a real passion for the goal of the organization. I do truly support what this organization stands for and believe that it can help make Greenville a better place. They partner with Association of Junior
For example, UC Merced has a club on campus called “Hands for Help” that are known to help out within their communities such as the homeless. Recently, they had a fundraiser to help donate necessities such as toothbrushes, deodorant, or even soap bars for the homeless. It explains in the article, “Hands for Help (H4H)”, that, “By taking an in-depth look at the difficulties faced by the homeless community, Hands for Help aims to step forward and take action towards creating a lasting positive change in the lives of the Merced homeless” (Hands for Help, Par.1). By doing so, they are creating an environment where people can get involved in their communities and help those in
Have you ever visited a public or private non-profit agency that addresses community issues once in your life? As a matter of fact, we have a lot of choice, ranging from education, health, humanities to general human services. I had an opportunity to go to Goodwill in Seattle, which is one of an American nonprofit organization, so I can have a good chance to broaden my horizon regarding the meaning of Goodwill.
Nonprofits represent a huge sector in the United States that includes hundreds of thousands of different organizations. Community-based organizations VISIONS and the Center for Comprehensive Health Practice (CCHP) where I conducted informational interviews represent a significant segment of a community and provide human, social and education services that help to ensure a decent standard of community living. Organizations address the issues that affect the individuals in the society as well as a community. Both organizations provide a series of charitable activities that bring improvement and create sustained social change in the community.
