NORFOLK, Va. – Monnazy Finney-Smith’s career-high 25 points helped Hampton complete a season-sweep of the Norfolk State women’s basketball team with a 77-65 victory over the Spartans on Monday at Hampton Universitie’s Convocation Center.
Gabrielle Swinson recorded a career-high 19 points to lead the Spartans (14-14, 9-7 MEAC) in their final regular season game. Making her first start since Nov. 30 at High Point, Swinson led the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals. She dropped seven dimes and grabbed six rebounds to match career high’s in both categories and registered a game-high five steals as well. However, Roberts made two free throws to start another 7-0 run for the Spartans and Swinson made two layups to cut the deficit to 44-38 with 6:21 left in the third quarter. Consequently, that would be the closest Norfolk State would get the remainder of the game. Heading to the fourth, Hampton led 54-44, after closing the period by outscoring the Spartans 10-6.
Once again, the Lady Pirates opened a period with a run. In the fourth, Jephany Brown made a layup and a triple, followed by a deep three from DeJane James to open up an 18 point lead at 62-44, with 7:10 left in regulation. Norfolk State turned up the pressure in the full court and went on a 10-4 run of its own over the next 3:27. The Spartans trailed 66-54 with 3:43 remaining.

Entering the game Roberts was 27 points shy of becoming the 22nd Spartan to reach the 1,000 point plateau in their career. She tallied nine points and will enter the Mid-Easter Athletic Confernence tournament 18 points shy. She was also, 10 rebounds short of moving into 10th place all-time in school history in rebounds. Saddled with two early fouls, she registered zero rebounds for the first time in her 85-game career and remains 10 rebounds

Pollard continued to have a stellar game defensively as she was putting the Springers guards on lockdown this afternoon. Wiggins did not stop either with her dominant game as she was flirting with a double double. Springers through everything they had at Princess Anne, but on this day, it just seemed like it wasn’t going to be enough. The clock began to tick towards the one minute mark, and you could see few people around the Siegel Center begin to hold up fours, implying that the Lady Cavaliers were on their way to their fourth straight state title if they held on for one last minute, well they did. Lady Cavaliers added another State Championship to their legacy. This made number 8 for Head Coach Darnell Dozier, while senior Nyla Pollard became the only female in the area with 4 State Titles.
Commodores hit Hampton with everything they had, you could tell the tank was beginning to run empty for them. Crabbers just continued to stretch the lead. Matthias Carver looked to be the one to make the fat lady sing in this game with a deep three-pointer. Clock hit zero and the score read Hampton 63 Maury 49. This win punched Hamptons ticket to the State Playoffs.
Belmont's offense was back at work at the 3:37 mark of the quarter with Young running for eighteen-yards. Young would be sacked on the drive by #17(not on either roster I have)for a short loss at the 1:36 mark of the quarter. Centenary and eventual champion Texas Lutheran both led the tournament by ending a pair of team’s seasons. With the Ladies finishing third, freshmen Nichole Aldridge (pitcher) and Margeux Smith (designated player) were both named to the SCAC All-Tournament team.
PVAMU took advantage of the GSU’s missed opportunity and marched down the field from the 24 yard line. Lee and the Panthers appeared to have the Tigers on their heels as they moved the ball to the GSU’s 33 yard line. From that point, Dawonya Tucker rush for 33 yards to the for a touchdown, Owen Hoolihan added the PAT with 5:08 left in the quarter to give the Panthers a 16-0 lead.

Facing a 4th and five with 4:47 left in the third quarter,the Indians elected to go for it. Jack Beeler was sacked for an 12-yard loss by #8 Marcus Jones. The Cougars carried that momentum with them on the ensuing drive. It tool 8-plays to cover the 49-yards for the score, with the score coming in the shape of a 4-yard run from Bailey. The point after kick locked this one up once again, at 14 apiece with 1:22 left in the quarter.
Granby came out in the 1Q with a heavy dose of Giovanni Jones, and it was making Jamestown sick as they had no answer. The Wang twins were not able to find the basket in this period, maybe the next, but until then Diamante Brown and Jason Schmidt, This gave the Eagles an opportunity to stay in the game with not much time left in this 1Q. Granby would close out this quarter strong leading 23-14.

The Pride would answer back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring 5 runs to lead 1-5. The Pacers would continue to compete, as a steal to home plate by Justin Torres initiated the momentum heading into the fifth inning (2-5).
