Imagine having to turn off all electronics and not being able to use it for a week. Technologies, such as the Internet, have provoked questions about the effects it has to students overtime. Although Internet users have become dependent to the internet, schools should not participate in national “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because the Internet is an exceptional source of information, the Internet is used for instant communication, and Internet users have shown increased signs of social interactions.

Growing up as a child I've always used the internet as a source to chat with my friends and family online, to do my homework, and play games. I’ve been on the internet since I was 10 years old. It’s a reliable source I always go to answer my questions. Our society now relies on the internet to answer all of our questions on a daily basis. In Nicholas Carr article his beliefs are that the internet has changed our society in many ways and it has created a negative effect to our way of thinking. However, the internet has provided a positive interaction to college students knowledge, such as YouTube videos offering tips on how to fix things, learn different languages, and how to solve classroom related problems.

In the article “Growing up Tethered”, by Sherry Turkle, she argues that technology today plays a major role in everyday life. Youths do not have the ability to branch off and have their own independence because of their reliance and attachment to technology. They also use technology to develop who they are as people and create an online personal identity of what they think is a perfect life. In comparison, their own life seems boring, pale and unwanted. Turkle also talks about how teenagers think of their phone as a “friend’s” and cannot live without it. When feeling a strong emotion, teens want to share their feelings with their friends and phone. I agree with Turkle’s opinion that technology is changing and will never be the same, which will be hard to improve this attachment to technology because too many teens are tethered.

Alfonzo Porter, a publisher for The Washington Post, is a strong believer that technology has caused massive problems when it comes to educating students. The publisher mentions that student are losing interest in school and becoming more distracted with their cellular devices. In the newspaper, Porter writes, “76 percent of teachers believed students are being conditioned by the internet to find quick answers, leading to a loss of concentration.” Alfonzo Porter believes that students are not taking advantage of technology, instead, they are manipulating it. In today’s modern society, there is a higher percentage of students using their cellphones to find answers, compared to students that are properly reading a book to find solutions to their problems. This issue is leading students becoming less interested in expanding their knowledge.

As the years progress, our society as a whole, is advancing in technology at a rapid rate. Nowadays, according to the article of the week paper, The next civil rights frontier is digital by Juan Andrade, states that access to home internet connection is a prerequisite for academic success, and for the most part it is true. Teachers now have access to new websites such as Google Classroom where they are able to post homework assignments and is expected by the teacher for the student to get the homework done. Unfortunately, many families cannot afford Internet access, and are limited to public library visits and to mobile data plans, these people find themselves at a disadvantage compared to their peers. Social media and instant messaging are major communication tools for students, which lead them to have few opportunities to talk in person. Recently, a multi-functional cell phone can replace a computer with internet access. There is a study in England that found that almost forty-percent of students surveyed said they could not live without their cell phones (Birdwell, 2007). Also, nearly ten-percent of students said that using cell phones caused them to lose their relationships and jobs (2007). Besides, through online education, students cannot get face-to-face instruction from professors and also lose their chances to communicate with classmates.

Although the number of families with access to the Internet has risen sharply in the past decade, a significant proportion of households are unable to afford the fees for these services. [1] It would indicate that students from such households at an obvious disadvantage. The students, unlike children from middle and upper income families, do not have ready access to the specialized and up-to-date information and entertainment provided by this new media. Thus, it reinforces the non–digital inequalities.
