The Traditional Dakota were the Dakota who wanted to keep their culture alive by holding on to their beliefs and wearing their culture’s clothes.
North Dakota is far from the equator, creating long cold winters. Besides making people cold, the decreasing temperatures also have a significant effect on mental illness. Seasonal affective disorder, also known as (SAD) is a psychological condition identified in the 1980s. Seasonal affective disorder effects 4-6 percent of people in the united states. (SAD) affects women 4 times as much as men.
HI I will be talking about the dakota and ojibwe and they been apart of minnesota for about 1,000 years.
Legendary. Drive across the border into North Dakota and you will read a sign that reads “North Dakota Legendary.” This word, legendary, is unique as it specifies the solitary depiction of the state North Dakota. Two years ago, I was fortunate enough to partake in these legendary experiences North Dakota has to offer. One legendary experience the great state delivers is world-class goose hunting. Little did I know this five-day hunting excursion would modify the way I would live my life forever. North Dakota’s one of a kind outdoor experience has allowed me to craft a deep vision for my future.
Throughout the streets of Portland stands the walls of a house that saw some of North Dakota’s most historical events. Built in 1880, John E. Fladeland was able to call this house his home. Fladeland was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1861 and moved to Portland, North Dakota as a young adult where he bought Forbes and Soldahl drug stores and managed the move theatre in town. After moving to North Dakota, the pharmacist ended up owning drug stores in Sutton, Luverne, and Bottineau.
I am going to compare and contrast the two region midwest and the west region. In a article it stated that the Midwestern United States or Midwest refers to the north-central states of the United States of America, specifically Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The West, region, western U.S., mostly west of the Great Plains and including, by federal-government definition, Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The west region is hotter than the midwest region.
Many would not believe that North Dakota has some serious environmental concerns, at least I did not. I always thought of North Dakota as a stable and somewhat of a quiet state. After doing some extensive research, I found that North Dakota has environmental concerns with terrestrial, atmospheric, and aquatic ecosystems. As for aquatic ecosystems, the main damage has been done through haphazard artificial drainage, excessive water diversions, and improper disposal of industrial waste. Impact to terrestrial ecosystems is caused by the constant industrial and residential work sectors as well as the mechanical destruction of plant communities. Lastly, atmospheric issues can be pointed to blowing soil and improper pesticide application. As we
The Carolinians, Dakota and Ojibwe all used the stars/ constellations to navigate through the waters, there were also many other functions the starts served to indigenous people and each had their own way of interpreting the usage and purpose of the stars. They played a very important role in their lives, they were used in practical ways to locate and travel, quick discussions of metaphorical storytelling “nape,” and philosophical teachings. The stars were very useful and without them indigenous people would be living very different lives today.
How much of a difference is there in the daily life of a midwesterner compared to an east coast resident? How does one’s life differ in the same country, but across a distance of over 1,551 miles? These factors are what makes one area or another a highly sought after place to live. Comparing my time living in North Kingston, Rhode Island to my time living in Garretson, South Dakota will show that both are great places, but the atmosphere and daily life of Rhode Island really set the two places apart, making it a better place to live.
Spring: The Dakotas tribe were returning to their camps when Spring had arrived. They got straight to tapping the maple trees. They would use the syrup for sugar and hard candies. They would also use the syrup for geese and duck bills. They would trade the syrup for other goodies .They would hunt muskrats, otters, beavers, minks, and martens. The muskrats were used to feed hunters.
When the United States Government got their land they promised them a payment of $1,665,000 dollars in annuities and in cash. As the result of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, and the Treaty of Mendota, Wahpekute and the Mdewakanton and the Lower Bands lost nearly 24,000,000 acres of land. The U.S. Government paid them 3 cents an acre and made the settlers pay a $1.25 per an acre. The U.S Government set aside land for two reservations for the Dakota besides the Minnesota River. Both of them were roughly 30 km wide and 110 km long, a little bit later they were made temporary. Some of the terms in the treaty were: Peace and Friendship shall be perpetual, payments held in trust, Laws against liquors in Indian Country, Rules and regulations to protect the rights of persons and property amount the Indians.
In the north, the climate typically consists of hot and humid summers and mild to very severe winters. These severe winters result in freezing temperatures,
In marquart’s memoir, she recounts north dakota with an honest, unglorified view of what it is and what it means to people. She uses contrasting diction and juxtaposition of subjects under a tone of honest admission.
On Sunday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which would have come a half a mile south of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota. HOWEVER, Instead, the Corps said it would begin to explore alternative routes. While members of the tribe and its allies celebrated the decision, some worry that the victory may only be temporary, given President-elect Donald Trump’s support for the almost 1,200 mile-long pipeline. However, North Dakota’s governor, the company and members of the state’s congressional delegation all denounced the decision. Therefore, members of the tribe have said for many months that the pipeline would destroy sacred lands and were worried an oil leak could
Bright clear white snow on the ground for almost half the year, fireplaces roaring in every home, drinking hot chocolate while reading an interesting book. These were all experiences and sights that had been well accepted and standard where I formerly subsisted. However, the hot summers of Texas differ greatly compared to the frozen state of Minnesota. I learned to dress myself differently depending on which season it is. All of the snow gear we owned has been given away for others to use. I enjoyed snow and the crisp air we received in the North. The environment that we moved to was drastically altered compared to my previous, and it was challenging to
