In general the weather varies between the different parts of the United States and the Middle East. More specifically, there are many differences in the weather between Iraq (where I used to live in the Middle East) and North Dakota (where I currently live). One of these differences is that the weather is too hot in the Comparing to Iraq, North Dakota weather is really nice in the summer, it gets a little hot for a few days but then it turns back to the nice weather. Also, in North Dakota it gets cloudy and rains in the summer. However, North Dakota winter is freezing. The temperature drops to -60 degrees (-51 Celsius) and snowfall reaches 16.8 inches in December. Therefore, in the winter people don’t walk or exercise outside. Unlike Iraq,
Bill Mckibben’s article, “Why Dakota Is the New Keystone” is written in a sympathetic tone, with vivid word choice, which establishes his argument by using pathos.
In a New York Times article “Why Dakota Is The New Keystone,” written by Bill McKibben he uses word choice that envelops a certain tone to the reader, varying sentence structure that make the piece interesting, and appeals to both pathos and logos. All of these writing skills are used to encourage Americans to stand up with the Sioux tribe. McKibben uses a strong choice of words that portray the Sioux tribe as the “heroes of the standing rock reservation, sometimes on horseback, have peacefully stood up to police dogs, pepper spray and the bizarre-looking militarized tanks and SWAT teams that are the stuff of modern policing” (McKibben). When the reader sees the words such as ‘heroes’ and ‘peacefully’ it is easy for them to see that the tribe is not the enemy in this situation.

The famous actor, Josh David Duhamel once said, “ North Dakota a lot of the times we don’t get a voice when these other states do, I feel like it’s a good opportunity to sort of extend help on behalf of the people of North Dakota.” Josh’s life has been influenced by the state, and he returned to a favor back to his home. Duhamel has starred in many movies, and has done wonderful things for North Dakota.
In marquart’s memoir, she recounts north dakota with an honest, unglorified view of what it is and what it means to people. She uses contrasting diction and juxtaposition of subjects under a tone of honest admission.

Many would not believe that North Dakota has some serious environmental concerns, at least I did not. I always thought of North Dakota as a stable and somewhat of a quiet state. After doing some extensive research, I found that North Dakota has environmental concerns with terrestrial, atmospheric, and aquatic ecosystems. As for aquatic ecosystems, the main damage has been done through haphazard artificial drainage, excessive water diversions, and improper disposal of industrial waste. Impact to terrestrial ecosystems is caused by the constant industrial and residential work sectors as well as the mechanical destruction of plant communities. Lastly, atmospheric issues can be pointed to blowing soil and improper pesticide application. As we
When the United States Government got their land they promised them a payment of $1,665,000 dollars in annuities and in cash. The U.S. Government paid them 3 cents an acre and made the settlers pay a $1.25 per an acre. The U.S Government set aside land for two reservations for the Dakota besides the Minnesota River. Both of them were roughly 30 km wide and 110 km long, a little bit later they were made temporary. Some of the terms in the treaty were: Peace and Friendship shall be perpetual, payments held in trust, Laws against liquors in Indian Country, Rules and regulations to protect the rights of persons and property amount the Indians.
Throughout the streets of Portland stands the walls of a house that saw some of North Dakota’s most historical events. Built in 1880, John E. Fladeland was able to call this house his home. Fladeland was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1861 and moved to Portland, North Dakota as a young adult where he bought Forbes and Soldahl drug stores and managed the move theatre in town. After moving to North Dakota, the pharmacist ended up owning drug stores in Sutton, Luverne, and Bottineau.
including eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Conflict was sparked not only by these events, but also by the food-driven movement of Sioux warriors and hunters to the western plains. The movement of Sioux to the west prevented the tribe from being able to secure its territory along the Upper Mississippi, which forced the Dakota to either defend against takeovers from other native tribes, or move their tribes further south This constant warfare caused the Dakota population to decline rapidly to one-third of its original population between 1680 and 1805. Population decline and loss of territory led the once dominant Sioux to lose their prominent position amid other Native American groups. Similar to other societies, the Dakota participated
South Dakota was one of the states that provided a great amount of uranium to be used during the 50’s, 60’s and the Cold War era. The demand of uranium increased and the constructions of mines were also increased. One of the areas that needed uranium was the military to be used in weapons ammunition and vehicles. Most of these mines were abandoned and the contamination spread around the nearby land and waters. “An earlier study of Forest Service land, on which the old mines from the 1950s and 1960s are located, found levels of arsenic, uranium and other contaminants in concentrations higher than what occurs naturally” (Walker, 2007). Some of these waste was carry down by rain precipitation to areas away from the mine. Indian reservations were affected by the mine contamination and
Countries near the northern hemisphere suffered the most. Internationally, 1816 was the most frigid year in the past two hundred years. According to an abundance of textbooks written by British historians (Tillotson, 2016), the average temperature was 1°C (“Year Without a Summer, n.d.). Precipitation, like rain, hail, and snow, was extremely common. Brown, orange frost drenched Europe in the summer. Newspapers forecast the weather with elaborate details. The escalated precipitation additionally led to flooding in Switzerland, hurricanes and lightning storms (Tillotson, 2016).
Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the mountains. January is the coldest time of year, with average temperatures dropping to roughly 23°
