Introduction The life of students includes many disciplines. There are a number of different learning styles that to choose from. They all have strengths and weaknesses in their. It is part of the learning process to figure out when to utilize each of the strategies, which is dependent on several factors. The level of the material and way it is presented make a big difference in which note taking strategy a student will use. The purpose of this assignment was to read a historical article about the development of nuclear energy and take notes on the article, using strategies presented in this unit. The strategies I used for note taking and why I am using it will be explained. The way that this strategy will help me prepare for an exam will also be expounded upon. The notes for assignment can be seen in appendix A. Highlighting This journey began with reading a very detailed historic article, Outline History of Nuclear Energy (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The level of the article was quite advanced, so I started with scanning the article headings and tried to get a grasp of the main ideas. …show more content…
The complexities of the material lead me to use outlining as my strategy for note taking. Outlining has been my main strategy in note taking most of the time, because I find it is very helpful in the way I learn. It helps me to focus on one section of ideas at a time without feeling overwhelmed with the enormity of the text. The article had a lot of historical dates and scientific material which works well with outlining. The only real issue I had was the vast array of subtopics to sort through. It took a bit of critical thinking to decide which details flow the best together, since there is no teacher guiding us in what focus the students should lean towards. I am usually old-school when it comes to outlines. The main purpose is to help me understand the material, which this outline did (California Polytechnic State University ,
In both of the supporting articles over the use of nuclear energy, there is a proficient amount of strengthens and weakness in both arguments. Though the use of the background and prior information given in the preclude, it allows the reader to understand the basics of nuclear energy and the way both authors are approaching to present their ideas. Using this analytical preface most of the information presented, allows the reader to have an idea on which side is more appealing to their choosing. Allowing the reader to get a perspective on both sides of the argument will insight them on the information presented and will ultimately give a substantial amount of evidence to back their claims.
America historically has taken advantage of Mexicans for labor and land. In 1848 Mexico, Cession Mexico was forced to secede what is now known as California, Nevada, Utah. Moreover, they also gave were compelled to abandon most of Arizona, roughly a quarter of Colorado, about ½ of New Mexico, and a small portion of Wyoming. In 1836, Mexico lost control of Texas when Texas declared its independence from Mexico, during the Texas Revolution, where the formal declaration of independent, Texas Declaration of Independence was announced.
Something always curious and provoking happens in science writing. Gwyneth Cravens is an author of five novels and many publications, and one who studies a topic in great detail. She creates an enormous work about nuclear energy for the last decade. Cravens’s research in her last published book titled Power to Save the World: The Truth About Nuclear Energy has led her to do an about-face on the issue. In her article “Better Energy” which was published in May 2008 in Discover magazine, she disputes and claims that nuclear energy is currently best alternative and should be considered as our future energy source. At the beginning “Better Energy” she commences by introducing James Lovelock, who was greatly
One of the greatest proponents of the Atomic Age is the aspect of clean, reusable energy. This method of obtaining energy was long sought after, and lead to many failures. Prior to this era, cities and other societies relied strictly on coal, hydroelectric, and natural gases and oils. These all had their faults, or were negative in many ways. For example, the amount of coal that was being burnt was leading our supply to last for about another hundred years. As the years progressed and atomic science was being diversified, the world’s reliance on coal was lessening. One of the first major breakthroughs with nuclear chemistry was the triggering of Uranium-235 to split its nucleus, releasing energy beyond
Pi states that the common believe that animals in the zoos are unhappy is “nonsense” (16). What response does he give to prove the contrary?
The Harlem Renaissance was a movement of the popularity of black culture and art during the 1920’s. During the Renaissance, Harlem was a cultural center, luring in black writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets and scholars. This was the first time that black cultural had really been able to shine in America. It was also the first time that blacks were accepted for their talents and abilities. There were even whites who began adapting some black cultural movements, at this time this was nearly unheard of. This movement led to a new cultural identity for the black people. Not everybody accepted this movement though. The Ku Klux Klan began prominent again in the 1920’s. Not only was the Great Migration of blacks from the south to
In the early 20th century, there were numerous groundbreaking advances in science. One of the most important ones was the splitting of the atom or nuclear fission. Physicists realized that fission could release tremendous amounts of energy in a form of a bomb. With WWII in the horizon, the U.S. government decided to launch the Manhattan Project, the race to develop the world’s first atomic bomb. The project took about 7 years, approximately $2 billion, and around 130,000 personnel to complete, (Hall,“By the Numbers: World War II’s atomic bombs”). The eventually success of the project would change countries around the globe forever. The results of the Manhattan Project opened up a new field of possibilities, leaving behind numerous consequences.
Summary: In this paper I will discuss the overall of nuclear energy to rectify some misconception. I will give the advantages and disadvantages for using nuclear energy and let the readers understand the basic idea of it.
Nuclear power was the world’s fastest growing form of energy in the 1990’s. However, presently it is the second slowest growing worldwide. Considering that nuclear power accounts for eleven percent of the world’s energy supply, one must ask what happened [Nuclear Power]. Why is it that the growth of nuclear power has almost completely stalled? The simple answer is that after meltdowns such as Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, many people are afraid of nuclear power plants, which causes great opposition to the expansion of the industry. Unfortunately, most people are not well informed about nuclear energy; many do not take the time to view its positives and negatives.
The disastrous meltdowns that cause whole cities to become uninhabitable, as well as leaving families homeless and laborers without jobs, have defined the negative perspective of what people see in nuclear power. However, even after such catastrophes, the pure raw energy output makes nuclear power essential for the future of the human race. As time passes, the world’s energy usage has grown an increasingly massive size every year due to the consumption swell of energy. Despite nuclear plants being a heavily controversial topic internationally, its advantages are very well recognized and it’s causing nuclear plants to slowly become the basis of our growing society.
Thesis: The uses of nuclear energy range from being a clean, renewable energy source to cutting edge medical procedures.
The world as we know today is dependent on energy. The options we have currently enable us to produce energy economically but at a cost to the environment. As fossil fuel source will be diminishing over time, other alternatives will be needed. An alternative that is presently utilized is nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is currently the most efficacious energy source. Every time the word ‘nuclear’ is mentioned, the first thought that people have is the devastating effects of nuclear energy. Granting it does come with its drawbacks; this form of energy emits far less pollution than conventional power plants. Even though certain disadvantages of nuclear energy are devastating, the advantages contain even greater rewards.
Whenever an assignment was given, I used to just write everything that I could think of, similar to a free write. After doing a free write in my scrap notebook, I would then go back and insert examples from the text to further prove my points. After taking this class, I learned that is the incorrect way to write academic papers and that the best way is to make an outline instead so that I can make sure that every point is proven, clear, accurate, and most importantly understandable. I was able to see the improvement of how outlines helped through my first essay. The essay was about picking out an image and explaining its means to the visual context and its impact on culture. My first draft I had learned that I needed to step back and see
On this assignment we are going to research all energy sources and their drawbacks, we are also going to explore on some the negative ramifications that even the clean hydropower have, additionally we are going to weigh those against the possible consequences of developing nuclear power, a controversial alternative to fossil fuels. We will discuss the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster as well as the 20th century Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in drawing conclusions about risk versus reward of nuclear energy use.
Imagine where you might be if it was not for your supportive, loving, engaged, and dependable family and friends? In our first couple years we get to live through a vast amount of experiences that we most likely do not recall even though they will influence and guide us in our future. Most of us do not constantly wonder who and what helped shape us into who we are today, but according to Some Early Childhood Experiences Shape Adult Life, But Which Ones? a study published in Child Development uncovered that “the type of emotional support that a child receives during the first three and a half years has an effect on education, social life and romantic relationships even 20 or 30 years later.” Our family and friends deserve recognition for their inspiring work and dedication which shines through the person we have become. As annoying and frustrating it is having your parents control your childhood, you will be appreciative of their engagement as an adult because you will realize how much they impacted your success in life. People’s life decisions are instigated by uncountable factors, but their environment and what drives their judgments and treatment of others are fundamental aspects directing their life path.
