Briefly describe the ethical dilemma in one or two sentences. (2 marks)

The first ethical dilemma occurs with the hiring of younger workers at the expense of older workers. The primarily reason for doing so, using the facts provided by the case, would seem to help reduce the prevalence of work related injuries. Younger individuals, for one, are less prone to injury than their older counterparts. Furthermore, younger workers are less expensive in regards to absenteeism and work related injury compensation.

Identify the ethical values that are involved and relate them to this situation. (6 marks)

The ethical values involved relate to fair treatment of employees in regards to their working environment. The case indicates that management is aware of the increased risk to workers health that the new equipment provides. Instead of attempting to alleviate the problems of the new equipment, management and the benefits coordinator have elected to simply ignore the problems altogether. This has a profound impact on the both the company and management for the long term profitability of the company. Management is simply foregoing employees for the benefit of the increased productivity the machine provides. I believe this is a direct result of the incentive structure of management. In many industries, management is compensated based primarily on sales figures. These figures vary depending on the industry, but many involve profits, goods sold, efficiency ratios, inventory levels
