Nothing Gold Can Stay Setting Analysis

Setting can affect a story by making the reader feel certain emotions depending on the season. As Foster said, that could be happiness and freedom in the summer or feeling older and worn down in the fall. Setting can also change and shape the story by offering certain hardships in different times, and having the characters in the story have different feelings during these times. They can also be used as symbolism. In “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost, season is very important as he uses it to show that nothing can last forever. He virtually says no matter the season, it will always return to winter. Summer cannot keep green, the flowers of spring only hold an hour, and in autumn the leaves begin to fall. The words grief is used …show more content…

They can also affect the mood of the characters. While the monster is staying in the hovel, winter offers him a chance to help the family beside him who always look do desolate. “I discovered also another means through which I was enables to assist their labours. I found that the youth spend a great part of each day collecting wood for the family fire; and, during the night, I often took his tools, the use of which I quickly discovered, and brought home firing sufficient for the consumption of several days” (99.) I am not going to figure out Harry Potter because I still haven’t read the last two books (oops). In another book I’ve read called The Infernal Devices series, a character named Jem is addicted to an opiate called yin fen. Without the drug he is weak, and unable to do his job (killing demons). With the drug, he would slowly die at a very young age. This book is set in Victorian England, and a lot of these things were going on in that setting, but the way he gets addicted evokes sympathy and remorse. His Dad had killed a particularly strong demon who came back and killed himself and his wife. Jem had to watch tied to a chair, and when that was over the monster gave him the drug and the drug only for a few weeks. His weakness does a lot for the plot because his best friend and love interest help him live normally as much as possible, but it is hard. Jem’s weakness is also a hindrance for his household at the same time, however, because his job is so demanding. Jem’s personality is also something to consider here. Jem is completely selfless and wants to help out everyone in any way that he can. He takes pride in his violin, and also tries his best to hide his illness due to embarrassment. His appearance is also important to consider. The drug draws all of the color out of him, and by that I mean even his hair and eyes are silver. Because of these
