Novel Analysis for Messenger Plot and Theme In the novel there were many plots, but i'm going to list two of them. In the beginning of the novel a quote I chose “Puzzled, he paused and listened. It was not singing at all, Matty realized, but the rhythmic and mournful sound they called keening, the sound of loss.” (Pg.9). I chose this quote because this proves to us that Village is unique then other communities. They not only accept people’s differences they also keen when they lose someone. In the end of the novel a quote I chose “Wait for the true need, Matty. Don't spend the gift." (Pg.93). I chose this quote because when Matty and Kira were in the Forest they had to hurry because the Forest was making it difficult for them to pass through. Matty was remembering what Leader told him to wait for when it was time to use his gift. This affects him because he doesn’t waste it he saved it until it was the right time to use it. The theme of the novel is one person's sharing of their gift can positively impact and change the society. In the end of the novel Matty shared his gift with everyone he impacted everyone because when the people of the Village went to the Trademart people had to give something up in return for what they wanted. They all changed so when Matty shared his gift he turned those back to …show more content…

In the beginning of this book, Matt lives with Celia in a small house at the edge of the poppy fields. Celia is his caretaker, and he thinks of her as his mama. Matt is completely isolated and is only seen by the doctor once a month. Matt sees Celia every day before she goes to work and when she comes home from work every night.
Mattie Rigsbee is the main character in Clyde Edgerton's southern style novel, Walking Across Egypt. Mattie is a seventy-eight year old widow with two middle-aged children. Living alone in a small house, she makes sure that everything is taken care of. She cooks, cleans, mows the lawn, and takes up numerous responsibilities with the church. She is a very caring person with many friends and a family that loves her dearly. At the time this novel takes place, Mattie is at a turning point in her life. Confusion disturbed her, because the things that people are telling her are not the words that she is ready or willing to hear. Although begins to display some signs of aging, and her family
Kira also had a very strong relationship with her mom. After death, Kira was devastated. Her mom was the only one that believed in her, encouraged her, and was helpful. Kira’s mom taught her and never stopped fighting. Although, Matt was all these things he was only a child.
In the beginning Mattie experiences grief for the first time since her dad died. Her friend and co worker Polly, had suddenly died one night when she was sewing. Even though Mattie wasn’t able to pay her respects to Polly’s mother she knew there was other things to worry about. Only a few chapters later Mattie’s mom became sick with the same disease that was now raging across the city. Mattie took care of her mother while she was experiencing the symptoms of the fever. It is clear throughout the beginning of the book Mattie perseveres through hard times even if her family and friends are sick and dying.
While Celia, his care taker, went to work, Matt would sit in his room and read his book to his toys. He would quickly realize how lonely his home was and when the kids of the Alacran House appeared at his window, he was very excited. He broke the window and climbed out, injuring himself. He was willing to be friends with anyone that he trusted all of them until they began treating like an animal when they realized he was a clone. He searched for true friends, but many saw Matt as a lab project. People wanted to get rid of him except Maria, Celia, Tam Lin, and El Patron, so Matt was determined to show others he was more than just a clone. He wanted to be respected and treated like a human being, but to reach his goals he runs into many obstacles that lead to unexpected
The two were ultimately different in the beginning of the story but eventually Mattie has to endure what Zeena did and it makes Mattie more alike to Zeena. Irony is seen since in the beginning it may have seemed that Zeena had a terrible life but in the end Mattie was the one stripped of all that she
Eventually, he found a new hope pinched in his fingers, Mattie. This light was true, but his failures would not allow him any kindness. In the end, Mattie developed similarly. He ruined her as
Mattie does not beat around the bush when it comes to justice. She has a fixed view on how law should be carried out against Tom Chaney and stops at nothing to achieve this. Put simply, Mattie wants him dead, and she wants him to know that he is dying as a result of him killing her father. This view and interpretation of justice closely resembles the “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” philosophy of the Code of Hammurabi where the life of Tom Chaney must be payed for
As you can see Mattie put herself at risk facing her father’s killer and also showed that her weakness is her poor skill on how to handle a gun. Second part is the abyss where, “the initiate faces the greatest challenge of the journey…. Often final step…
Mattie is the older character in this book that was owned “Jesus is Lord Tires” and was a character that acted as a mother to multiple characters. “She looked at me the way Mama would have,” (Kingsolver 252). This quote was found near the end of the book that signified Mattie looking at Taylor and Taylor observing that look and thinking that it is similar to her real mother’s. Mattie gave some money to Taylor for the trip and Taylor refused to take it, so Mattie said that it was for everyone in the car and gave her the look that reminded Taylor of her biological mother. “’I’ve got some peanut butter crackers,’ Mattie said leaning over Turtle. ‘Will she eat peanut butter?’,” (Kingsolver 252). Mattie seemed worried about Turtle and offered her something to eat. She acted as a mother figure to Turtle because she fed her and gave her more food when Turtle hinted for it. Mattie was the one that fit as a mother figure to a lot of characters in the book. She was the person that led a sanctuary and was the one who took care of the many.
Matt, a dirty, one syllable boy that lives in the fen, is a dynamic character. At the beginning of the book, Matt is physiological. “I can’t pay you, but I’ll tell you some new stories.” “The boy shook his head.” He is physiological because he would not help Kira rebuild her cott unless she gave him something in return. Later in the book, Matt changes to a character that has esteem. “It’s here!” “The big giftie!” Matt is now a character that has esteem because he is more respectful to people and doesn’t do jobs just for something in return.
The most reasonable idea that allows Mattie to be the protagonist is that she cared for a little girl named Nell even though she was struggling to care for herself. I predict that having Nell in the hands of Mattie, Grandfather dying, and Mother being gone made sense come to Mattie assuring her that caring for others as well as yourself alone is a huge responsibility. This quote shows Mattie’s thought after Grandfather’s death, “No, I could care for myself. I was not a child.” The two character traits that explains how Mattie matured is independent and a hero. She is independent because she was on her own for awhile and had to find food for herself and care for herself. This piece of evidence shows how she was alone with no one to feed or care for her, “I was alone; Grandfather was dead and Mother missing.” She had no one to count on but herself. Mattie being a hero shows a lot of her maturing. This is because she didn’t care for lots of things such as doing chores, but when things changed she realized that other people were in the need of her help like
Later on the story Mattie experiences her grandfather?s death, which taught her to stand up for herself. After all of the hardships that Mattie and Grandfather faced out on their own, they came back to a Philadelphia very unalike the one they had left, and their coffeehouse home was no different. It was completely robbed of almost everything and shards of glass were everywhere. Although this did not stop two thieves from coming in and killing grandfather when he tried to fight back. Mattie did not take this well however. After Grandfather fainted, she gashed the robber?s shoulder with her granddad?s sword which sent him running down the street with Mattie chasing him close behind. This event clearly shows that Mattie learned to stand up for herself against higher authority, which is a big part of adulthood.
I know this because Mattie would have not told the sick people that you will not die. As a result more people weren't afraid for their loved ones. So Mattie had more hope. And she actually spread more hope the town. And to the people living in the town.
Bataky, the more he changes. Matt, who once shared each disturbing story he could with his companions, won't share the privileged insights Mr. Bataky admits to him. He tells his companions: "Holy messengers can't disclose mysteries" , which is the main insight that Matt is starting to have confidence in his own particular goodness. Matt starts to dress in an unexpected way, and like a holy messenger. Marley sees "he was dressed all in white: white shirt, pale tie, white jeans, and even white tennis shoes.
