Nuclear Waste Nuclear power is a very interesting yet controversial subject. One of the main benefits of nuclear power is the electricity produced by nuclear power plants. These plants produce one-fifth of the electricity used in the United States, providing more electricity than other sources like solar and wind. It is claimed that of all of the energy sources available, nuclear energy probably has the lowest impact on the environment, because nuclear power plants do not release harmful gases that can threaten the air, land, water or cause impact on global warming. So, if the energy produced by nuclear power is a cleaner, more environmentally friendly and efficient source of power, then where is the controversy? The controversy is not…show more content…
This waste is so lethal that standing near it without shielding would kill you in minutes. This type of radiation will stay radioactive to humans and other creatures for hundreds or possibly thousands of years. Low-level waste is usually generated from hospitals and other industry that includes paper, rags, tools, clothing, etc. It contains small amounts of radioactivity that are usually short-lived and considered not as dangerous. So the question is, now that we have created all of this toxic waste, what do we do with it? What can be done to safely store it or better yet transform it into non-toxic waste? Governments around the world are considering different methods of waste disposal, but so far there has not been much progress in the most effective way to handle it. Several methods have been discussed, which include long-term above ground storage, like the United States currently uses on Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Other methods discussed are outer space disposal, ocean disposal and deep in-ground disposal, among many other suggestions. However, things that must be taken into consideration are earthquakes and other catastrophic events such as terrorist attacks. We have seen the effects of the tsunami and earthquake in 2011 that caused a major accident at the site of the Fukushima, Japan nuclear plant. To this day, this plant is still too radioactive for anyone to be able to safely
