The Impact of the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on the Future of Nursing in Education, Practice and Leadership
There needs to be more emphasis on community health, long-term care, and coordination of care. In addition, the curriculum should include more leadership, systems thinking, and quality improvement. The IOM also recommends having incentives for nurses who wish to achieve higher levels of education such as tuition reimbursement, expansion of grants and loans, and more scholarships. As the number of students is expected to increase, educational institutions need to hire and retain faculty by creating competitive salaries and benefits. The IOM suggests doubling doctoral level nurses by 2020 (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The committee further encourages life long learning in order for nurses to practice to their fullest potential. The emphasis of improving the education system will produce a highly educated, well-rounded workforce who is equipped to effectively meet the health care needs of Americans today.

With an estimated 64 million people having seen the Institute of Medicine’s reccomendations on the future of nursing within the first year of its release, it is arguably one of the most influential pieces of medical literature of the 21st century, leaving a lasting impact on healthcare and paving an innovative path forward for the nursing profession. The institute of Medicine (IOM) is a nonprofit, unaffiliated orginazition. Its purpose is to provide advice to the government and private sector in order to make an informed health decision. The IOM was established in 1970, and for the past 40 years, the organization has been answering the nation’s most pressing questions about healthcare.
The influence of consequential ethics as an ethical framework (the greatest good for the greatest number) opposes the ethical principle of deontology (i.e., the rightness of an act itself determines what is right). Both of these impact the nursing profession. Modern social exchange theories are based on the principle of utility. Read the assumptions of social exchange theory and consider how these would affect the nurse-patient relationship, compared to how these impact the nurse within the health care environment. Once becoming a nurse a number of professional standards must be maintained to stay abreast with the profession. I had to ask myself the same question when I was summarizing the recommendations. After reading the three articles, I understood that the AACN, Carnegie and IOM recognized the importance of nurses to further their education in order to achieve patient-centered care, practice safety, and provide quality of care with better patients' outcomes. I realized that there was an overlap between the reports and the need to address more complex issues in nursing.
The second guideline outlines the need for nurses with higher degrees and competencies. This pursuit of higher education must be seamless. The third suggestion stresses the need to be equal partners in designing the future of healthcare. Nurses must be part of the solution to health care reform. Fourthly, there is a need for accurate numbers of health care workers available. With this data accurate projections can be made. These facts must be provided on a state level as well as regional (Institute of Medicine, 2010). For the nursing workforce, the IOM Future of Nursing report is of great importance.
