As a nurse practitioner (NP), it is vital to extensively do research and carefully negotiate well when renewing a contract. When negotiating, it is essential to know the target range, additionally, understand it is a contract position which means no benefits, and always remember how much you worth. Furthermore, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners [(AANP) 2018] states, it’s important to understand the job description and if there will be any hospital rounds, continuing education allowances, and if the company provides malpractice insurance coverage. My role as a contractor benefits the employer because as such, it requires that I pay my taxes and besides, the company saves money by not providing me with paid vacation, health insurance, and retirement. The different ways in which my role can be beneficial to the employer can describe as follow: as a contractor, I am responsible for paying the entire percentage of the taxes that are required by the internal revenue service (IRS) as opposed to the W2 employee, the employer pays half. Also, as a contractor, there are no benefits such as paid vacation, health insurance, and retirement.
