I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.

There are many different fields to choose from while working as a Registered Nurse. “Registered nurses work in hospitals, physicians' offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. Others work in correctional facilities, schools, or serve in the military.” (bls.gov). You can also specialize in a specific type of nursing by seeking employment in that individual line of work or by taking a certification test. “The Nursing2011 Salary Survey reports that nurses certified in a specialty earn an average of $10,200 per year more than nurses who are not.” (pncb.org). If you choose to go further with your education you can continue past a bachelor’s degree and get a master’s degree becoming a nurse practitioner.

From 2014-2024 employment rates have been projected to grow 16 percent. The healthcare services will go up due to the aging population. Nurses need to educate and care for patients that have chronic conditions. This helps them be able to get better jobs and be better nurses. Health insurance is expected to continue increasing due to federal health insurance reform. The job opportunities are supposed to be good. In some areas it’s a competition to get a job at a certain location. (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

The healthcare market has just increased recently because of the high competitive nature of the job in some parts of the country (Bureau of Labor statistics, 2017). A BSN in nursing has a higher advantage over RN because employers are seeking for their critical skills and more of experience. The demand for nurses will always be on the increase because the society has lots of people who have medical problems and need healthcare. It takes a lot to faze me, blood, guts and bodily fluids are of no exception. I'm looking into the health field, as a registered nurse. My ASVAB score pointed to more of a social and realistic career, which pointed to more health related careers. I'm currently in the Lycoming Career Technology Center for health careers and I'm in my third year. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in field and I knew it would be a Nurse. Being in any occupation of the health field isn't easy the same goes for nurses. Countless hours of college education, repetitive relearning classes, semi-high salary and long hours, doesn't sound fun for some, but for me, it sounds great.

As a matter of fact, registered nurses also have excellent employment outlooks and great payment prospects. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nursing profession is expected to increase 27 percent in number from 2010 to 2020 (Edublogs, 2012), which constitutes an outstanding and unique ascent. Regardless of the economic recession and its devastating effect on employment, medical practitioners will never cease to be in demand. Virginia Henderson tells what she thinks a nurse is about in her book The Nature of Nursing. “… helping of the patient to do those things leading toward health or a piece of that which he ordinarily would do for himself if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge, and to help him in such a way that he is able to do for himself as soon as possible” (Fredrickson, 2). Nurses have many different responsibilities but one of their main responsibilities is to provide care for patients in the best way possible. Nurses must be ready at anytime to be able to take care of someone in need (Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow). They have to be able to remain calm, even in tense situations, and also need to be able to come up with solutions fast and correct (Nursing School Programs). Nurses take direction from doctors who are working on the same patients as them. Nurses do many different things for a patient. They bandage wounds, retrieve information on the patient, and give the patient medicine that the doctor has prescribed. The place a nurse works in is usually fast-paced and a little overwhelming. A type of nurse that seems like it would be exciting would be an emergency nurse. An emergency nurse can work in ambulances, helicopters emergency room, and sports arenas. When it comes to all the different kinds of nursing there is most likely a nursing that could fit anyone’s personality (Discover Nursing).

Are you interested in a nursing career? Then you should know that there are several paths to becoming a nurse. Two of the most common ways are to earn your RN designation through a 1 year program, or to earn your four year bachelor of science in nursing, or BSN. Let’s take a closer look at these two options so you can decide how you want to start your nursing career.

I have had many plans and ideas of who I wanted to be from infancy, displayed my interest through Halloween costumes and dress up with my little sister. But growing up, I realized I can be whatever I want to be so far as am determined and work hard towards my goal. As I grew up and started college, I finally figured out on what I wanted to be and began working towards it. Being an African, I helped my mum nurse and nurture my grandmother when she had stoke. The bond and experiences we shared together before she passed made me a better person and from there, I knew nursing was what I wanted to do. Am pursuing this career path because, I believe people need all the care they can get in terms of healthcare and having a support system.

Receiving a post-secondary education will benefit me by providing the knowledge and skills I need to become a skillful pediatric nurse. As a child, my passion was always to become a nurse to provide holistic care for children not only in my community but around the world to medically underserved populations. To reach my goal, I plan to attend Miami Dade college for two years at the medical campus to become a Registered nurse and earn my Associate of nursing degree, afterwards pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Posterior to graduate, I will transfer to the Duke University school of nursing in North Carolina to earn my Bachelor of science nursing degree.

According to Angela Barron, “A nurse is someone who alleviates pain, fastens healing and advocates for individuals or families.” The role of a nurse is between the patient and the doctor, for this good communication skills and patience are needed. Being a nurse is a job that will give you satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment, making a difference and helping others.

Nursing has become a harder profession to get into. It is one of the most rewarding professions out there in the world. A patient wants to be reassured that the person taking care of them knows what they are talking about, and know what to do when the time comes. Nursing is more than just helping people get better. It is a livelihood that a registered nurse can be proud of achieving.

Nurses provide excellent patient care, teach patients about health conditions, and give advice and support to patients and their families. Nurses have a variety of duties. They must monitor and record patient symptoms, take vital signs, watch patients diet and physical activity, supervise less skilled nurses, and order and interpret tests to access the condition of the patient. Nursing can be a wonderful, caring, and thoughtful job. However, to other nurses: nursing can be a difficult, tiring, and stressful job. Any job can be tough but nursing is emotionally and physically draining on a person. Nursing can be such a burdensome and demanding job sometimes because of the long hours, the exam to become a nurse, and dealing with other people.
